The Arab League has said it could enforce a military no-fly zone over Libya if leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi allows his own people to suffer further bloodshed.

The organisation, whose members include countries across the Middle East, said it could team up with the African Union and patrol the skies above the country to prevent the Libyan air force carrying out attacks.

Secretary-general Amr Moussa said: "The Arab League will not stand with its hands tied while the blood of the brotherly Libyan people is spilt."

Col Gaddafi warned earlier that thousands of Libyans would die if the country was invaded by Western forces.

Arab League calls on Libya to halt violence

CAIRO, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The Arab League (AL) on Wednesday called for an end to violence in Libya and considered further steps which included the imposition of a no-fly zone over Libya.

The Arab League Council at the level of foreign ministers convened on Wednesday to discuss the latest regional situation, especially in Libya.

A resolution issued after the meeting said the AL cannot stand aside while the Libyan people suffer bloodshed.

Steps included the imposition of no-fly zone over Libya under the coordination of the AL and the African Union, it added.

1. It is the right answer...western forces have no place there at this time
We can give all sorts of logistical support as well as standoff assets like AWACS and EW, but the face to the Libyan people must be Arab or at least African. It is not clear to be that the Arab League can pull off the no fly zone without such support

2. A very encouraging sign. Let the Arab league be peacekeeper in Arab nations.
But somehow I think US neocons won't be able to stand it unless they get their grimy claws into this somehow.

4. Egypt has those hundreds of F-16's we sold them, they could do it, they are right next door
Give their new govt. a boost, show of strength, Arab solidarity and all that.

I'm pretty sure we sold them some Apache helicopters and JDAM's too.

Just a thought.

5. This would be best solution
a no fly zone is clearly needed, but it'd be best with little or no US support
