Wisconsin's Walker vows no compromise on unions - "I want to be different. I want to be unique..."
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker vowed on Thursday never to compromise on the core of his plan to curb the power of public sector unions and said investors should buy the state's bonds precisely because he was taking a tough stance.

In an interview with Reuters Insider exactly two weeks after state Senate Democrats fled to Illinois to stall action on Walker's proposal, he said public sector unions must be reined in to allow local governments to cut costs.

"I want to be different. I want to be unique. I want to be an innovator here and give my local governments the ability to manage their own budgets. On that part, we can't compromise," the newly elected Republican said.

He added that he saw room to talk with opposition Democrats on "the process." He did not specify what that meant, but talks were reported to be under way with the 14 Democrats who departed the state. Various media accounts said the Democrats were seeking minor modifications to Walker's proposal on workplace safety and recertification of unions in exchange for the senators returning to Wisconsin.

Earlier on Thursday, Walker told reporters that unless the Democrats returned, he would begin preparing layoff notices for some 1,500 state workers by the end of this week in order to achieve the necessary budget savings.

16. Wisconsin governor tells absent senators: Return or 1,500 get laid off
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker on Thursday warned 14 absent lawmakers trying to stall his controversial budget bill to return to the state Capitol immediately to vote on the measure, or layoff notices will be sent to 1,500 public employees before the weekend.

"Unfortunately, if we don't have action by tomorrow we have a legal and moral obligation to start forewarning people," Walker said a Thursday night press conference.
The layoffs would take effect April 1, the governor said.

.....

Concerns about safety risks arising from the nonstop presence of demonstrators at the Capitol were heightened Thursday with the discovery of 41 rounds of hollow-point rifle ammunition found outside the building.

.....

Walker has repeatedly said the collective bargaining provisions of his bill are not negotiable. The governor showed little sign of backing down from that stance Thursday night.

24. When will he begin to feel embarrassment
at the number of threats he makes. New hour, new threat; new mood, new threat; new day, new threat. He is the most threatening person I know of. I wonder if he feels strong or weak when he talks like this? I feel bad for his kids. I wonder if he threatens them all the time like he threatens the state of Wisconsin and the legislators? It would drive me crazy to live with a person like this. I am not feeling sorry for this man at all... I am thinking, though, that this approach to leadership by threat must come from somewhere. And did no one know about this leadership style before he landed on his throne in Madison?

That's the road this bozo is heading down right now. He's desperate and I can smell the flop sweat all the way down in NM.

He's backed himself very nicely into a corner, so nicely that even the Koch brothers are going to withdraw support and temporarily withdraw interest in buying up utilities owned by the public.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Walker get hauled off to prison at some point. That's how seriously he's stepped in it.

31. Given that his motivation & maturity level are obvious, this pathetic little man
is setting the state up for a boatload of lawsuits.

These jobs are going to be eliminated or saved depending on whether or not the Democrats come back? Playing blackmail with people's jobs?! If this doesn't affect a rational person's sense of decency, nothing will.

Interestingly, I've read somewhere that a layoff was in the works before the standoff. Walker, however, is putting the blame on the Democrats. The people know the truth.

"The Democrats didn't come back home when we told them to so you lose your job"

Even if the Democrats came back it would take time to implement his horse shit program so the immediate need for layoffs is an obvious blackmail.

49. Wisconsin governor tells absent senators: Return or 1,500 get laid off
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Gov. Scott Walker warned Wisconsin could take steps Friday to lay off 1,500 state workers -- unless 14 absent lawmakers return to the state Capitol.

The legislators left Wisconsin to protest a proposal that would restrict the collective-bargaining rights of many public employees. Walker has said the measure is needed to get the state's financial house in order.

The lawmakers fled to Illinois to prevent a quorum for voting on the state's budget repair bill, which would limit collective bargaining to wages and require public workers, with the exception of police and firefighters, to cover more of their retirement plans and health care premiums.

Walker said Thursday night that the state would "have a legal and moral obligation to start forewarning people" of impending layoffs if the lawmakers did not return to the Capitol at once to vote on the measure. He warned the state could send layoff notices before the weekend.

"Ummm...do the name 'John D. Rockefeller' ring a bell?"

Does Walker realize how very funny he is?

Meanwhile, not so very funny:

"He added that he saw room to talk with opposition Democrats on "the process." He did not specify what that meant, but talks were reported to be under way with the 14 Democrats who departed the state. Various media accounts said the Democrats were seeking minor modifications to Walker's proposal on workplace safety and recertification of unions in exchange for the senators returning to Wisconsin."

I hope this is a lie.

75. Every use of force
causes an equal and opposite reaction. Basic law of nature. The longer it takes and the stronger the force the more chaos that is caused when it all comes loose at the end.
