NFL, Union Agree to 24-hour Deadline Extension
Source: AP

By BARRY WILNER

WASHINGTON (AP) - A reprieve, even for one day, provided a touch of optimism in the NFL's labor dispute with the players' union.

Nobody, though, should get comfortable.

The NFL and the players' union decided Thursday to keep the current collective bargaining agreement in place for an additional 24 hours so that negotiations can continue.

"We're continuing to talk. I don't see how that can be a negative," said Jeff Pash, the league's lead negotiator.

1. Concern is fading...
...the older I get, the less I care about professional sports. I used to love Football season - now, I am pretty much indifferent.

I support the union to be sure - just not really pressed if the come to an agreement or not.

2. They can stay out all year for all I care but

.... the economic toll to many people would be huge and the owners lost their big stick
when the court ruled that they couldn't keep getting t.v. money during a lock out.

3. You're right, the people really impacted are the support staff and stadium folks.
The players and owners are just two groups of people who make a lot of money fighting over getting more. Hard to shed a tear for either side.

4. I have a little support for the players because their playing careers are ....

.... very short, they wind up w/ lifetime physical problems, and many of them die young too.
But I have much more concern for all the support staff people and local businesses that
need the traffic that the NFL generates to get their pay checks.

BTW this is one thing that was lost in Lebron James' move to Miami .... all those jobs around
where the Cavs play basketball got really hurt. James could have stayed in N.E. Ohio and
been a real winner even if he never got to win a NBA title.

6. I was gonna respond with an "I don't give a rodent's rump"

But I first read the other comments, and had to conclude that there are lesser folks that would suffer if these prima donna jocks and their owners could not come to an agreement.

On the other hand, I'd like to borrow our esteemed speaker's comment of "so be it". So we're really concerned about hot dog carts and T-shirt vendors now as an anchor of American industry. Pretty damned sad commentary after we've resignedly let REAL industry be sent to foreign lands. NOW we bitch!

The Chinese are buying everything we own, why not let them have the NFL??? With ownership would come to freedom to treat their employees the same way they treat them in China - problem solved.

Actually.... the WHOLE DAMNED "professional sports" ridiculum is a waste of time and money. I can buy 4 or 5 lbs of franks for the cost of ONE while I luxuriate in a stadium seat (I really naver have, to tell the truth).
Imagine what kids might aspire to if these jocks excelled at things that really mattered??? Chasing a ball so you can have the living SNOT beat out of you and maybe end up with a fancy ring. Assuming your eyes can focus on it and you're able to realize what it's significance is.
