At least 30 civilians killed after Gaddafi loyalists try to retake rebel-held town of Az Zawiyah
Last Modified: Mar 04 2011 17:52 GMT

At least 30 civilians have been killed after security forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi, Libyan leader, attempted to retake the rebel-held town of Az Zawiyah, near the capital Tripoli, that has for days been defying his rule, witnesses have said.

The rebellion in Az Zawiyah - the closest rebel-held territory to the capital and also the site of an oil refinery - has been an embarassment to the Libyan authorities who are trying to show they control at least the west of the country.

Eastern regions of the country, around the city of Benghazi, have already fallen out of Gaddafi's control after a popular revolt against his four decades of rule.

"I have been to hospital less than 15 minutes ago. Dozens were killed and more were wounded," Mohamed, a Zawiyah resident, told the Reuters news agency.

3. The use of words is interesting like rebels, insurgents or terrorists

Nobody in the US would call people fighting in Pakistan or Afghanistan against NATO, rebels...

4. I had to ask this on a post in the last couple days, who were the rebels, etc
Reminds me of Central American Freedom Fighters, etc. Rebels are those fighting against the current government? Against the oppressors? I know what you mean, it is odd terming.

5. Witness: Peaceful protesters mowed down in Libya
Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- "Indescribable" and deadly violence rippled through the Libyan city of Zawiya on Friday, according to a witness who said pro-government forces gunned down peaceful protesters.

The eyewitness said battalions of forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi attacked the protesters with mortars and machine guns as they were demonstrating in the city's Martyrs Square, and they assaulted an ambulance and killed people who fell wounded.

"Civilians were killed but we can not say how many. We buried nine people so far," the witness said. "The attack was indescribable. Direct gunfire was opened on people."

People in Zawiya, west of Tripoli, and "their public leadership have secured and took control over the city from the 'armed terrorist elements,'" state TV reported. But the eyewitness said protesters have some control inside the city, even though security forces have been surrounding Zawiya.

6. Zawiyah is circled by Gaddafi forces: Journalist (AFP)
Zawiyah is circled by Gaddafi forces: Journalist (AFP)

4 March 2011, 9:21 PMLONDON — A British journalist in Zawiyah reported on Friday that the town was circled by forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, as state television reported they had regained control from rebels.

“This town is under seige, it’s been encircled by the army,” Sky News reporter Alex Crawford said in a report shortly after 1700 GMT.
In an earlier television report from a hospital in Zawiyah, she said at least three people had died and there were up to 50 people injured, seven of them critically. Two children were among those hurt.

“We were walking with the anti-Gaddafi protesters through the main street of Zawiyah, there were several thousands of them, the bulk of them unarmed,” she said from the town near Tripoli.

8. Ack!
This has been bugging me all day. Tripoli AND its suburb Az Zawiyah are BOTH in the Western half of Libya. Almost to the Tunisian border in fact (as far west as you can go).

This is the third story today that I have seen make this mistake and I hear it from people around me from time to time.

Sorry, just a pet peeve. I had to get that out. LOL

9. If the Libyan people believe they are being treated unfairly,r in a criminal manner, godspeed!
I support them as a combat vet. For you teabaggers and freeper lurkers out there, what the people of libya are doing is an actual REVOLT against an unjust leader and government. See like, the offenses are SO BAD, the only choice is to take arms and fight!

Nothing like your paltry cries of "socialism-ism" over here....douchebags.
