State officials back off Capitol damage claim
Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (jsonline)

Madison — State officials charged with overseeing the state Capitol are now backing away from their estimate that demonstrators did more than $7 million in damage to the building.

"I think that's more of a worst-case scenario," said Jeff Plale, the former Democratic state senator who is now the state facilities administrator. "There are other estimates."

Touring the Capitol Friday morning with state architect Dan Stephans, Plale said he had not immediately observed any damage from demonstrations over Gov. Scott Walker's budget-repair bill, though the pair was just starting their tour. Plale said that he didn't believe the state had had any experienced contractor provide the quote on the damages.

Officials said in Dane County court Thursday that the damage could come from tape used for posting fliers and papers and other materials.

1. Too late
The meme will live on on RW talk radio, blogs and Fox News. Protesters trashed the Capitol!

Just like when Bill Clinton trashed the White House.

20. First They Lie, Then
First they lie, then they noodle back. But the damage is done: the lie is believed. Then, repeated, person-to-person. This is the danger of media consolidation: talking points, regardless of veracity.

17. You could possibly do $7 million
worth of damage hanging posters on walls with tape if you had to touch up all the little spots where the posters removed the paint. To spend that kind of money on touching up little spots on the walls would require you to buy about 700,000 gallons of paint. The walls space that needed repainting would need to cover about 140,000,000 square feet. This estimate doesn't include the cost of non-union labor, which would be insignificant.

We are all pretty tall, so we won't have to bill for ladder rental.

We will definitely set a cap of $7M.

28. Actually that's not the issue, but thanks for playing.
The issue is that government officials lied under oath...and that claims of damage have been exaggerated to meet Republican goals of keeping Wisconsin citizens out of their own Capitol building.

33. We don't know for a fact that it was exaggerated yet
The damages are still being assessed, and there were damages to the building. Furthermore, there were signs not to tape things to the granite walls. There'a a reason for that. Why were they ignored? Protest all you want, but respect public property.

All residue is easily removed without leaving a trace. The granite remains intact.

29. The issue is they LIED to force Americans to stop accessing the statehouse
To lie and make up damage to keep Americans from protesting in the state house is a HUGE issue. Perhaps one of the biggest issues so far. It is not an attack on the unions or the workers...that is an attack on the basic principles of our Constitution. It shows more than ever that Walker has no regard or respect for this country. Only for his own ambitions and plans.
