Huckabee denies criticizing Portman's pregnancy

By ANDREW DeMILLO

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Friday denied that he was criticizing Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman when he suggested her pregnancy was glamorizing the idea of having children outside of marriage.

Huckabee, who is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination, earlier this week complained about the perception of celebrities like Portman having children while unmarried. Portman, who won an Oscar for best actress for her role in "Black Swan," is expecting a child with fiance Benjamin Millepied.

"One of the things that is troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children, and they're doing just fine,'" Huckabee told radio host Michael Medved on Monday. "But there aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie."

Huckabee made the comments after Medved mentioned the Oscars and Portman's pregnancy. Huckabee said the public wasn't seeing the financial struggles single mothers face.

Was this because Natalie twice made pro union statements in the last month? During her SAG acceptance and the Q&A after her Academy win.

2. What about Saint Bristol Palin? Why isn't Huckabee applauding Portman
like he applauded Palin? Both of them "chose life."

14. And unlike Bristol, Portman didn't use her pregnancy as a means to make money.
She was financially secure before she became pregnant.

15. +1 - nailed it right there - Huckabee and Republicans are so full of shhhhhhh
Seriously, did Huckabee come from a time machine or something? If he had any courage he'd straight up say that he wants Christian conservative "need to be married to be pregnant" ideology into law.

3. I don't think the story is Huckleberry criticizing Portman but rather that he
can't keep his story straight from Monday through Friday! That inability would make for one scary president!

5. Portman is not a single mother, she has a supportive partner.
What difference does a ceremony and a piece of paper make in his support of her?

And as for kids of single mothers, they often do alright. My mom was a single mother and I've recently graduated with my PhD and am just about to graduate with an MD. Not exactly a fuck up, if you'll allow me to boast for a moment.

16. Yes! And who would dare criticize someone like Portman?
She has done everything right. She is intelligent, waited for the right time to have a baby, never been in trouble, has always been classy, is a great role model for young girls, and is a Democrat. Oh of course that explains it.

31. Having some official god botherer mumble over you
while you itch and can't scratch in uncomfortable formal wear is the whole idea for the religious reich. If you don't get mumbled over, it doesn't matter who you are or what you've done, you're going to hell if you're allowing some man to do that to you, especially if you do a shameful thing like produce a baby.

Males, of course, are utterly blameless.

7. Huckster thinks the public isn't seeing the financial struggles single mothers face?
What planet does he live on? Those of us living in the real world see single mothers struggling every day, and then watch assholes like Huckabee criticize them for continuing their pregnancies (and condemning abortion in the next breath) and then attempt to pull the safety net out from underneath them.

Shame on him.

26. Huckabee on Bristol Palin
Mike Huckabee, in 2008, on Bristol Palin having a child with a man she was engaged to, before they’d actually married:

“It ought to be a reminder that here is a family that loves one another. They stuck with each other though the tough times and that’s what families do.” … Huckabee said the surprise pregnancy announcement should not affect vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s support in the conservative and religious right communities. … “I’m grateful for the way she’s being supported by her family.”

Atlantic Magazine

Mike Hucksterbee is a smarmy fraud.

32. What's the matter, Huckabee? Blowback a bit much for you?
Good for Natalie Portman, who's remained silent. The fact she attended Harvard, speaks four languages and started working at (IIRC,) 14 in a very competitive industry speaks much louder than a blowhard Republican who now realizes he has, officially, Stepped In It. In a big way.

Should I mention she's 29 - old enough to think for herself - and has received the highest honor of her industry? :lmao:

:woohoo:
