Saudis Mobilise thousands of troops to quell growing revolt
Source: By Robert Fisk, Middle East Correspondent

Saturday, 5 March 2011

Saudi Arabia was yesterday drafting up to 10,000 security personnel into its north-eastern Shia Muslim provinces, clogging the highways into Dammam and other cities with busloads of troops in fear of next week's "day of rage" by what is now called the "Hunayn Revolution".

Interior ministry vows to use all steps "to prevent attempts to disrupt public order" following recent Shia protests.
Last Modified: 05 Mar 2011 15:15 GMT
Saudi Arabia has banned all protests and marches following recent anti-government protests in the kingdom’s east, reports say.

State television on Saturday quoted the interior ministry as saying that security forces would use all measures to prevent any attempt to disrupt public order.

The ban on public demonstrations comes amid media reports of a huge mobilisation of Saudi troops in Shia-dominated provinces in order to quell any possible uprising.

According to The Independent, a British newspaper, 10,000 security personnel are being sent to the region by road, clogging highways into Dammam and other cities.

Saudi Arabia bans all protest and marches
Move follows several small demonstrations by minority Shiites

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia said Saturday it would ban all protests and marches after minority Shiites staged small protests in the oil-producing eastern province.

Security forces would use all measures to prevent any attempt to disrupt public order, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by state television.

The ban follows a series of protests by Saudi Shiites in the kingdom's east in the past weeks mainly to demand the release of prisoners they say are long held without trial.

Saudi Arabia's Shiite minority mostly live in the east, which holds much of the oil wealth of the world's top crude exporter and is near Bahrain, scene of protests by majority Shiites against their Sunni rulers.

10. Its not easy being royalty these days.
Telling people that you can order them about by virtue of birth, just doesn't seem to satisfy the masses anymore.

Shouting, "Obey me! I am your king!" just doesn't have that romantic ring to it.

The royal advisers who said you needed the internet to join the rest of the world, can't seem to figure out where the people got all these ideas about freedom and elections.

Outlawing protests no longer seems to have any effect.

All the loyalty oaths you made the army take, don't feel quite as reassuring lately.

--> Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown...

12. Not to mention that the last thing you should do when facing a crowd
calling for freedom is lock the doors!!! All cracking down does is prove that they do not have freedom.

Lived there for 2 years. Which just by coincidence happened to be the time of the Iraqi invasion/Desert Storm etc.

The Saudis are scared spitless of the Shi'ites. Every year during Ramadan and the hajj (pilgrimage) season, the Saudi military surrounded Shi'ite areas with armored vehicles and keep a close watch.

Also, we'll probably be hearing a lot about the Saudi Arabian National Guard (SANG). The SANG should not be confused with the American or any other national guard.

The SANG only has one purpose in life - to protect the Saudi royal family. It usually gets the best and newest weapons/vehicles, as compared to the Royal Saudi Army (RSA). All SANG members come from tribes either related to, or fanatically loyal to, the royals.

The SANG was formed after the 1965 attack on Saudi Arabia's first TV station, by religious fundamentalists in the RSA. They were led by a prince of the royal family and nephew of King Faisal. The rebel prince was killed on the direct orders of the King, who said, "No one is above the law." Ten years later in 1975, Faisal was assassinated by a brother of that dead prince. He was a drug-addled former playboy turned religious fanatic.

16. Probably watching Libya to see if shooting civilians works.
If it does, Ben Ali, who is exiled there, and Mubarak will be sorry they couldn't get their militaries to do the same.
