Beijing says all Chinese (roughly 36,000) evacuated from Libya

BEIJING — China said Saturday it had completed the evacuation of all its nationals from strife-torn Libya following the largest such overseas operation ever undertaken by Beijing.

Two charter flights Saturday had taken 778 people from the north African country, where an uprising against the regime of Moamer Kadhafi is raging, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

"The government's working group on Libya has successfully completed the evacuation of Chinese citizens from Libya," the statement on the ministry website's said.

Beijing will continue to send military and charter planes to repatriate Chinese from other countries in the region, the ministry said, adding it hoped to have them all home within a few days.

Let's hope they don't get locked up when they arrive home, to keep them quiet about what they've seen and heard.

1. The Chinese managed to show everyone else up
with a wholly appropriate response.

So far as them getting locked up - I think you might find they were either working on Chinese projects or were there as part of their education. I came across a pair of Chinese youngsters in Cuba doing a 5 year Chinese government paid course learning Spanish.

2. The Chinese have been very efficient in getting their citizens out and deserve kudos for that

They returned home early, having witnessed a revolution begin. That's what I'm talking about when I refer to keeping them quiet about what they've seen and heard.

I'm not sure if you heard about this or not, but the Chinese government have been extremely twitchy about the recent wave of unrest spreading to their country. So much so they have been beating up foreign journalists at demos that never materialized: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4750597">China floods Beijing with security before planned protest

BTW, last sentence of the article in the OP...

"Most of the Chinese nationals in Libya were working in the railways, oil and telecom sectors, according to state media."
