Interior appeals oil drilling ruling
Source: Politico

The Obama administration late Friday appealed a judge's orders directing the Interior Department to act on several Gulf of Mexico deepwater drilling permits.

The appeal is the latest salvo in the ongoing fight over the speed with which Interior is – or isn't – letting oil drillers get back to work after last year's BP oil spill.

Let's not let enviromental and safety concerns get in the way of making a buck, judge.

Thank you Obama and Salazar for standing up to this right wing judge.

1. The Judge is wrong

No new drilling permits should be issued at all. We are at the cross roads here when it come to continuing our addiction to fossil fuels or transitioning to clean, renewable energy sources.

Allowing new drilling is just enabling our addiction. We need to bite the bullet and reduce our consumption (and dependence) on petroleum. No new wells starting right now.

2. Agreed, but it may be more a legislative problem
Given that we've been allowing the oil and gas industry to write our oil and gas laws, it's possible that the judge may indeed be correctly applying the existing law, in which case, what has to happen is getting the laws re-writen to reflect the public's interest as opposed to the exclusive interests of the oil and gas cartels.

3. True Dat
Who knows what Cheney did when he had big energy write the legislation.

One things for sure though. We still haven't begun to see the damage from the last BP episode and we can not afford another one. We have many leaks in the ocean floor. Me thinks the dead dolphins might be telling us something~
