Wis. gov. rebuffs Democrats' request for meeting
Source: AP

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin Democrats who fled the state nearly three weeks ago asked Monday for a meeting with Gov. Scott Walker to talk about changes to his plan to eliminate most public workers' union rights, a request the governor dismissed as "ridiculous."

Walker said he and his administration have been in communication with at least a couple of the AWOL Senate Democrats about a deal that could bring them back, but the lawmaker who asked for the meeting, Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller, "is firmly standing in the way."

"Right now, I'm so damn mad at his misrepresentation of the truth and the public should be as well," said Sen. Bob Jauch, one of two Democrats who had talked last week with the Senate Republican leader about possible compromises. "Trust is completely broken down now. I don't believe anything he says."

Among the 14 senators who fled the state are Sen. Julie Lassa, who is pregnant, and Sen. Fred Risser, who at 83 has been in the Legislature since 1956. He is the longest serving lawmaker in the country.

2. TRUST? He has the balls to use the word "trust"?
Walker has dropped a bombshell on WI with this union-busting move, has REFUSED to negotiate despite union concessions and has threatened to arrest and fine the Dem Senators - and he's complaining about lack of TRUST?

Major cojones.

3. This is what results when the right vilifies the very concept of "politics". . .
and perceives it as some devious scheme to ride roughshod on their priorities, instead of the natural give and take of reasoned debate and compromise.

There appears to be no negotiating with Gov. Walker. Should the Democrats return, based on some assumption that Walker and the rest will treat with them honorably, they'll find I fear nothing but further autocratic demands. Best to stay away, for four years if necessary, than to meekly submit . . .

4. My hope is that the 14 Senators have news cameras with them
when they do meet with the governor with all arrangements agreed to, in writing, prior to the meeting.

Without a written agreement, I can envision the governor putting them in handcuffs.
