Poll: Maine Republicans seek conservative alternative to Snowe
Source: BDN

Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe is losing support among Maine conservative voters, according to a poll from the North Carolina-based Public Policy Center.

The poll of 434 usual Maine Republican primary voters, released Tuesday, shows that 58 percent of respondents would vote for a more conservative challenger in the Republican primary, and that the same percentage perceives Snowe as too liberal. When asked if Snowe belonged in the Democratic Party, the Republican Party or as an independent, 34 percent of respondents said independent, 33 percent said the Democratic Party and 27 percent said the Republican Party. Six percent were not sure.

Snowe still leads the pack of announced candidates in the Republican primary, however. When asked who they would vote for next year, 43 percent of respondents said Snowe, 18 percent said Scott D’Amboise, 10 percent said Andrew Ian Dodge and 28 percent were undecided.

D’Amboise, who previously ran for Congress, announced his candidacy against Snowe in February 2010 — more than two years before the 2012 GOP primary. Dodge, a tea party activist, announced his candidacy in February of this year.

2. Screw the Maine conservatives
Rather have Snowe than a Tea Party nominated clown.

3. I'm starting to wonder if we're going to see the Tea Party and GOP do a Thelma & Louise in 2012.

5. Snowe is "conservative" -- rightwingers who want her out are "extremists".
Destructive extremists.

Olympia Snowe is one of the last remaining "conservatives".

6. No she's not
She's certainly no liberal either, she's moderate with a slight right lean. I have to call it like I see it, Guiliani and Bloomberg aren't conservatives either.

9. Yet every day, she votes with far right-wing extremists: her Party.
And she's a dependable party-line voter on all procedural matters and a large percentage of all legislation that has GOP approval.

So just how does she have a moderate record, anyway? Is it her website? Her campaign promises? Because she's goose-stepping right alongside her bosses when it counts.

11. Olympia Snowe was the only Republican to vote for the Senate Finance Committee's healthcare bill
Olympia Snowe was the only Republican to vote Tuesday for the Senate Finance Committee's healthcare bill. This is not the first time she has broken with her party.

13. Yes, an insignificant dissenting vote in committee.
But when the Republican-backed version is vomited forth from the House, she'll vote for it.

14. It's not moderate, but moderate when compared to the 46 or so other pukes
It's also moderate when compared to millions and millions of puke voters. Her and Guiliani are moderate pukes. Conservatives would be John McCain and Bob Dole. Far-right would be Jesse Helms, Pat Buchanan, and Mike Lee. Libertarian-right-wingers would be Rand Paul and Ron Paul. Liberal Republicans would be Lincoln Chaffee and Mike Bloomberg before they switched parties.

7. Good. Maybe Maine will finally have a Democrat in the Senate again.
If the Maine electorate had voted Snowe out last time, we could've gotten a better healthcare bill

12. With Lepage as Gov, I'm not surprised that the Teabaggers are in...
control of the Republican activists in Maine.

He's such an imbecile, and he will ruin the charm of rural and coastal Maine in less than 2 years, but the Teabaggers won't care. All THEY want is more tax breaks, no matter what the cost.

But if the Teabag folks manage to get someone as crazy as LePage to be the Republican Senate nominee, Maine just might elect a Dem to the Senate. Most progressive Mainers are not that stupid, just not as active as the Teabag loonies.
