Arrest in attempted MLK Day bombing in Spokane
Source: Seattle Times

The FBI has made an arrest in connection with the attempted bombing along the route of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in downtown Spokane.

An FBI source in Washington, D.C., said one man was arrested east of Spokane. Agents, including a bomb expert from Quantico, Va., were preparing to search a house where others associated with the suspect were living, the source said.

The suspects are apparently affiliated with white supremacists.

The source, who is familiar with the investigation but is not authorized to speak on the record, said that "good police work" led to the arrest and that forensic evidence taken from a backpack bomb was key to the case.

It is not known whether additional arrests were anticipated. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Spokane is expected to hold a news briefing later Wednesday.

36. Even this was supposedly the most evil bomb
any of the task force had ever seen.

It was speculated at the time that it was the work of an ex-veteran.

Guess what?

That will probably come true. I do not think however that it is a good form of evidence of a persons political leaning. When I was younger (seems so far away now lol) I had a copy of Mein Kampf. Not because of a desire to follow the philosophy as my own, but to learn. Simply to learn. I kept it for two years, then burned it. The only reason I kept it that long is it took that long to drag myself through the muck.

I did learn from it. A lot in fact, but I am not now a Nazi, right-winger or fascist.

But, again. I think you are right about this lot.

16. Man charged with attempted MLK Day bombing linked to neo-Nazi group
A Stevens County man charged with the attempted bombing along the route of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in Spokane has links to a neo-Nazi group, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

According to the center, Kevin William Harpham, 36, was a member of the neo-Nazi National Alliance in late 2004. The center said it was not known when Harpham joined or whether he was still a member.

17. Prosecutor: Suspect in custody in MLK backpack bomb attempt
Source: CNN

Authorities have a suspect in custody in connection with a backpack bomb found in January along a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade route in Spokane, Washington, according to U.S. Attorney Michael Ormsby for the Eastern District of Washington.

Ormsby told CNN that Kevin William Harpham, 36, of Colville, Washington, is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific on charges of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and possession of an unregistered device.

The suspect was apprehended away from his home, which is in a rural part of Washington state near Colville, a law enforcement source told CNN.

Authorities are trying to determine if the bomb attempt was part of a conspiracy, but for now, the scheme seems to be a "lone wolf" situation, the source said.

19. It's always a "lone wolf"...
...unless the suspect is needed to gin up support for suppression of civil rights, massive weapons sales to foreign governments, or as an excuse to invade countries and steal their resources. Then all of a sudden it's a massive conspiracy against god fearing people everywhere.

23. Report: Spokane bomb suspect is Army vet, white supremacist

Report: Spokane bomb suspect is Army vet, white supremacist

~snip~
Update at 3:53 p.m. ET: The Spokesman-Review, citing a source, is identifying the suspect as 36-year-old Kevin Harpham, a U.S. Army veteran and white supremacist originally from Kettle Falls, Wash. ("1610 Friendly People & One Grouch")

The Southern Poverty Law Center says that in 2004 Harpham was a member of the National Alliance, which it describes as one of the most visible white supremacist organizations in the nation. The group was founded by the late William Pierce, who wrote The Turner Diaries, a novel about a future race war that is believed to have influenced Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.

Records show Harpham served in 1996 and 1997 with the 37th Field Artillery Regiment at Fort Lewis, Wash., according to Mark Potok, head of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Update at 3:15 p.m. ET: U.S. Attorney Mike Ormsby said his office is preparing a news release that will identify the suspect, The Spokesman-Review says. But he cautioned that few other details would be revealed.

A neighbor told KHQ-TV the man was apprehended as he drove across a bridge over the Colville River in northeastern Washington. Agents used explosives to open a door at a residence in Addy, south of Colville. The neighbor described the home as a trailer.

24. White Supremacist Arrested In MLK Backpack Bomb Case
Source: KHQ-TV Spokane, WA

SPOKANE, Wash. – Federal authorities have arrested at least one person allegedly connected to a backpack bomb found during a Martin Luther King parade in January. Federal agents called the backpack bomb an act of "domestic terrorism" and their agency's highest priority in the Spokane area.

Viewers in Stevens County told KHQ at least nine FBI vehicles sped towards a house near Highway 395 south of Colville. At least two counter-assault vehicles were also at the house, according to the viewer.

City workers found a suspicious backpack along a parade route on Martin Luther King day where thousands of people were scheduled to march.

Authorities later determined the backpack contained a bomb at least one agent described as, "the most sophisticated" he had ever seen.

27. And the FBI didn't even have to lead him on
He did this all by his little self. Thankfully, he's white, so we know it wasn't terrorism, because the bomb wasn't going to blow up a log truck or something like that. And, since our little bomber probably identifies as some incredibly fucked-up version of "Christian," Peter King won't need to convene a hearing on "Christian" terrorists.

So, all's well in the Republic. Look! Charlie Sheen's doing something cuh-razy! Ha, ha, ha!

33. A bit more on suspect
Paul Mullet, the former self-proclaimed leader of the Aryan Nations , said that Harpham expressed interest in joining the Aryan Nations back in the mid-2000s. Mullet said Wednesday afternoon that he had about a dozen conversations with Harpham after he contacted him for information on joining the Aryan Nations. Mullet said that Harpham never joined the group.

34. "attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction "
Has there been some type of weapon deflation or something? Once upon a time WMD refered to Nuclear, Biological or Chemical weapons. Now just about anything qualifies. Hell, we now have more evidence to invade Washington state than we did for invading Iraq.

If "WMD" is enough grounds for declaring war on a soverign state, the term WMD should be reserved for something more than a backpack bomb of conventional explosives.

(Don't get me wrong, this asshole needs to be removed from society, I'm just say conventional explosives should not be called WMD)
