Wis. lawmakers pass bill to curb union rights

Gov. Scott Walker says he'll sign legislation as soon as possible

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin lawmakers have voted to strip nearly all collective bargaining rights from the state's public workers in one of the strongest blows to the power of unions in years.

The state's Assembly passed Republican Gov. Scott Walker's explosive proposal 53-42 Thursday. The state's Senate approved it the night before after using a procedural move to bypass its AWOL Democrats.

Walker says he'll sign the legislation as quickly as possible.

The vote brings a swift end to a standoff over union rights that has rocked Wisconsin and the nation. Tens of thousands of protesters have converged on the state's Capitol for weeks of demonstrations.

Assembly passes union measure 53-42 after bitter debate

The body voted 53-42 in favor of the proposal, sending the bill to the Republican governor after an epic month of struggle unlike anything in living memory in Wisconsin politics.

All Democrats voted against the bill and were joined by four Republicans - Dean Kaufert of Neenah, Lee Nerison of Westby, Travis Tranel of Cuba City and Richard Spanbauer of Oshkosh. All other Republicans and the body's lone independent, Bob Ziegelbauer of Manitowoc, voted for the bill.

After Republicans cut off debate a little more than three hours after it started, Democrats jumped up to protest. Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) brought a megaphone out from under his desk and through it yelled, "Mr. Speaker, I demand to be recognized." He was ignored.

The crowd erupted with chants of "Shame! Shame!" as Republicans filed out of the chamber.

They have no idea what they've started here, and they're going to be very sorry after the recalls.

3. They have no idea the hardship they have created and the contribution to the
demise of this country.

It's like we have to relive the Depression before these idiots recognize how we got there in the first place.

5. Win, lose or draw, it will be catastrophic for the people of Wisconsin
There's no good way out of this and all the rest of the crap our gov is dumping on us. All we have left to fight for is keeping it from being the worst possible scenario.

on a personal note: I'm still reading. Going well so far. ;-)

4. This "victory" for those Dicktators will be short lived. Once the recalls have happened
everything will be reversed and the state will be bluer than blue. Hope the bastards enjoy this while it lasts, because it will not stand.

19. Trust me, all of Florida should be on the edges of their seats listening to how this gets resolved.
First it was Michigan, next it will be Wisconsin. We get all kinds of people coming to Florida thinking things will be better here, and believe me, it's worse. Much, much worse when it comes to government looking after your interests.

After police carried demonstrators out of the state Assembly Thursday, Republicans entered the chamber and approved Gov. Scott Walker's bill repealing most collective bargaining by public employee unions.

10. RECALL, REPEAL, REPEAT
these gopers are going to fall hard. They have messed with the wrong people. A lot of these people voted for him and the gopers. A lot of them now realize what a huge mistake that was. It wouldn't surprise me if the 19 gopers and 52-53 gopers don't also ram down a bill w/o the Dems & one Indy to amend the recall rule before May. Thats how evil they are. This reminds me from the history books of how Hilter gained power.

Take away the rights of people. Use fear to turn them against Jews (Muslims), et al., sound familiar?

I heard on a radio show this morning, a caller from a volunteer union. These people can create their own groups until the Union rights are restored. Which I believe is happening as we speak.

Maybe they should yell "Sinful" instead. Greed has always been a sin.

23. Those idiots!
A public union employee, a tea party activist, and a CEO are sitting at a table with a plate of a dozen cookies in the middle of it. The CEO takes 11 of the cookies, turns to the tea partier and says, 'Watch out for that union guy. He wants a piece of your cookie.'
