Obama offers to assist earthquake-stricken Japan
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama assured earthquake-ravaged Japan Friday that the United States "stands ready to help" and said the Federal Emergency Management Agency is ready to come to the aid of Hawaii and West Coast states that could be hit by Pacific tsunamis.

Obama said in an early morning statement that his administration would "continue to closely monitor tsunamis around Japan and the Pacific going forward" and he directed FEMA to mobilize.

The largest earthquake in Japan's history — measured at a magnitude of 8.9 — pummeled the eastern coast of Japan Friday, accompanied by a towering tsunami. Hundreds were dead or missing.

FEMA administrator Craig Fugate said tsunami warnings and watches have been issued for the U.S. territories of Guam, the Northern Marianas Islands, and coastal areas in Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington.

6. Can we PLEASE cut the bashing crap.
Seems that more and more, some on DU can't help but knee-jerk react like juveniles no matter what the situation. Any type of natural disaster becomes a grave situation and it is doing some damage (swer system, piers, etc) in Hawaii right now and may do the same on the U.S. mainland.

10. I oppose government funds helping Japan
when we are making old people here in the US freeze due to budget concerns. How about putting Boehner and McConnell in charge of a private relief effort. I feel badly for all the people hurt by the quake and tsunami, but there is plenty of damage from it here in the US (see Crescent City, CA where my sister lives) that needs help first. If we are going to turn into a hard hearted people, and we have, let's just send a card.
