Heartbreaking: While the death toll remains in the low hundreds right now (officially) it seems sure to spiral much higher.

According to the Kyodo News Agency, via BBC, the official missing persons tally is around 88,000.

It's well known that a lot of people are simply stranded in the cities, including Tokyo, and in many cases the people are probaby safe. It's not clear how they're included in the number.

5. It's going to look really awful when daylight breaks
We are (as of now) about 3 or 4 hours till daybreak in Japan. When that happens, I think we're going to see terrible destruction and, I fear, equally terrible loss of life. The one positive note is that japan is really well prepared for emergencies. I hope that their preparedness makes matters far less worse than they otherwise would be.

10. From the pictures coming out.....
I fear that may be a low estimate.

We have friends and co workers there. Our prayers are with them and I hope we can contact them soon. This is just awful.

11. Metro Tokyo is about 13 million people, (much like L A), and Sendai 1 mill
and smaller and larger towns along the coast in between those two places. not to mention other coastal areas to the north and south of there.

88,000 MISSING... does NOT equate to dead.... lack of public transportation, phone service, etc can easily displace tens of thousands for a day or two in cities that size.

But I am sure over 1000 maybe 10,000 will eventually be listed as permanently lost to this event.
