If they're admitting those levels; you can be assured they're much higher/

24. 1000x ?
Wonder what a control unit is? Is that the control room.....where people work? And if it's 8x out at the gate, either thet are releasing the steam pressure, or worse?

3. Good thing they had nuke power. Imagine the hazard if solar panels
or wind generators had been damaged in the quake? Hoo-wee!

No other deaths yet.

25. Sure, but you said 'at the reactor site', and didn't specify cause.
Likely no one has been injured by radiation exposure, yet, if the 1000x number is accurate and goes no higher.

32. No deaths/no injuries yet.
Still early though. I'd wait till the reactor is under control (or totally out of control) before wondering too much. Fog of war and all that.

1000x normal emission is still two full decimal places below what you get from a whole-mouth dental x-ray.

34. Yep, except a whole mouth dental x-ray lasts about 30 seconds.
This is like getting 3,000 full mouth dental x-rays every day for the duration.

I would imagine that even the ADA would not recommend that.

These one-time spot exposure figures are cute. Overlooked is the actual 24-hour-a-day emission in these amounts.

Kinda like saying, "Well, it's like being stabbed with a short nail file." Yep, and thousands of continuous stabs with a mail file will kill you, and not over some mythical eon-ic type of time frame.

8. They (meaning EVERYBODY who supports nuclear energy) won't see the
folly of trying to "contain" the nuclear fallout/spread/poisoning/whatever it's called. We think we can control everything on this earth - that we're the boss. :eyes:

Love your post.

11. It's pretty amazing to think
that after being attacked by nuclear bombs that they'd want to have nuclear energy at a place that has so many earthquakes. But I guess they were willing to take the risks.

Mother Nature is sick of being treated like shit! And she doesn't like her whales being slaughtered either, dudes. This is probably just the beginning of her long-awaited revenge. Can't say I blame her.

27. They'd be safe from the effects of nuclear power however
they also would have insufficient electricity to maintain their civilization if they tried to switch to nuclear/wind/hyrdo exclusively.

9. Some asshole on CNN now claiming that 1000x is actually
quite safe, will have no ill effects on anything or anyone, could go higher with no effects at all. Did not catch his name - white guy with white hair.

That's a relief!

Remember kids: Radiation is our friend, keeps us warm and glowing with health!

10. Tell that to the children who will be born shortly and develop cancer later in life.
Tell that to the people who will come down with a whack thyroid.

I'm sure "they" thought it was safe to watch the bomb testing from atop hotels in Las Vegas as long as you wore sunglasses. What we know know that we didn't realize then... and what will they learn in the future that we don't realize now?

15. 1000x 'normal'. Keep in mind, the radiation output of a normally working reactor is lower than the
earth's background radiation.

Japna has the most advanced technology for reactor safety.....if they failed no one can make it safe.

give me the warm power of the sun and the cool breeze power of the wind and give me the power a waterfall but take all your atomic poison power away !

TAKE ALL YOUR ATOMIC POISON POWER AWAY !

30. Safety is only one aspect to consider
it also must generate sufficient electricity to make it worthwhile.

You know those clocks people build using a potato to generate an electric current? Perfectly safe, more so than even wind power as they can't even fall over and crush anything.

However they aren't a real alternative.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2011/03/radiation-1000-times-normal-detected-around-crippled-japanese-plant/1

By Michael Winter, USA TODAY

Radiation 1,000 times normal has been detected inside a crippled nuclear plant in northeastern Japan where utility managers have released radioactive steam to reduce mounting reactor pressure, the Kyodo news service is reporting, citing the government's safety agency.

That suggests radioactivity could spread around Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 1 plant, where thousands of residents within a 6-miles were ordered to leave before dawn Saturday.

There's potential danger to the public from three of at least 11 nuclear power reactors that are shut down because of Friday's 8.9 earthquake, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

Managers at Fukushima No. 1 said before the planned release of steam that any radiation would be "very low and the safety of nearby residents has been ensured," Kyodo news service reported earlier. Within the hour ago plant officials said some radiation may have already been released, according to Kyodo.
