State's Labor Market Lagging Nation | Los Angeles Times
State's Labor Market Lagging Nation

By Don Lee, Times Staff Writer

California's job growth stalled in the last two months, sharply lagging the nation's job-creation pace and raising questions about the durability of the state's recovering labor market, according to state employment figures released today.

Hurt by declines in government and manufacturing jobs, the state's Employment Development Department reported that nonfarm employers added just 5,200 jobs in March — a fraction of what economists were looking for in light of the report last week that employers nationwide had bolstered payrolls by 308,000 last month.

California accounts for about 11% of the U.S. labor force, and some analysts were expecting the state to show 40,000 more jobs last month. Making matters worse, the state's previously reported 8,800 gain in February employment was revised to a 2,300 loss in jobs.

2. This one is too easy

MOST of the jobs created in the last 8 quarters have been
government jobs. Guess which government doesn't really like or
care about California (except as a place to raise cash).

3. Higher gas prices are going to help matters
I paid $2.27 for reg. in Pasadena yesterday!

The falling dollar should help agriculture and weapons exports but it not enough to offset the losses that arise from the budget deficits.

This year's $14 billion deficit is the lowest in three years.
Taking out that much spending out of the economy is bound to have an impact sooner or later.

I don't buy Arnold and Bush's tax burden arguements because between 1996 and 2000 71% of U.S. corporation (legally) paid no federal income taxes; I bet the state level figures are comparable. And I bet most of these companies got huge tax refunds too.

Can and YOU imagine paying NO income taxes for four years without going to jail?!?!?!
