Thousands (50,000) form human chain in protest against nuclear energy in Germany
Source: Euro News

The explosion at the Japanese nuclear power plant has given new fuel to a long-running dispute in Germany, where tens of thousands demonstrated on Saturday against plans to extend the life of the country’s nuclear power stations.

According to the police, some 50 000 people took part in the protest which saw a human chain spread from a nuclear power plant in Neckarwestheim to the city of Stuttgart.

Those participating in the demonstration said it was time for the German government to move away from nuclear power.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose government has extended the lifespan of Germany’s nuclear power plants, was set to meet senior cabinet ministers later on Saturday in light of fears of a meltdown in Japan.

5. this is in Baden-Wuertemberg, elections are coming up there March 27th, and could topple Merkel out
The new government, if this happens, will definitely turn the spigot off in terms of further bailouts to the rest of the EU, and could lead to the breakup of the Eurozone. This is the tip of the spear, politically speaking, in all the EU, atm.

6. Using nuclear power is literally insane.
No place on the planet is safe from an earthquake of the magnitude that just happened in Japan.

Every nuclear plant in existence is at risk for this type of event every second of every day.

Hopefully, many of the former proponents of nuclear energy will now change their opinions and join in the movement to ban nuclear reactors altogether.

After the example of recent lethal events in Japan, continuing to advocate for nuclear energy would be unfathomable to anyone but a conservative.

Please, let's all get together and end this madness before it happens again, with even more deadly consequences.

9. Very well said.
Now, can sanity actually prevail? Actions like this make me hopeful!

11. By that logic
isn't building anything at all literally insane?

There is no place on earth where you will ever be 100% safe, why bother?

16. Not so elementary, my dear Watson. You may want to consider thinking
Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 11:51 PM by Zorra
about that a little more thoroughly.

A good start would be considering the danger of the collapse of an outhouse caused by an earthquake, and then compare it to the danger of a nuclear explosion and a reactor meltdown caused by an earthquake.

17. Ok, so we can build outhouses
what about stadiums? One of those puppies collapses with 70,000+ people in it and it would be bad. Far worse than this reactor in Japan.

19.  I'm sorry.
If you do not perceptually understand the differences in relative danger between a collapsing stadium and a melting nuclear power plant, I don't have the time to waste explaining this to you.

Peace

8. This planet is too beautiful.
Nuclear energy is not worth the risk. We've already destroyed so much of our fatiguing planet.

The threats to nature that come with any nuclear power is too great. Wake up, world!

14. Too beautiful for humans, and come to think of it, 99% of every species that existed.
This planet has killed off the vast majority of species that ever tried to live on it... so, if by "beautiful" you mean "cruel, violent, merciless, and terrifying", sure.

12. Good for the Germans -- !! However, Obama is subsidizing new nuclear plants in USA!!
Think it's $36 billion in loan guarantees!!

Where have we ever seen anything like that invested in GREEN alternative energy?

Those who control our nation's natural resources for their own profit and gain

will be content to see all of us dead before they surrender that power and profit!!

Wake up America!!

18. Of course right across the border France has about 60 nuclear plants
Even if the Germans oppose them in their own country they are literally next door to a bunch anyway.
