Tens of thousands dead as Japan scrambles to avert nuclear catastrophe

LOCAL authorities in Japan last night said the death toll from Friday's earthquake and tsunami would be in the "tens of thousands", as engineers battled to stave off a nuclear catastrophe at critically damaged atomic power plants.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan said last night Japan was facing its worst crisis in 65 years, since the end of World War II.

Known and presumed deaths exceeded 2000 last night, but the policeman in charge of the worst-hit prefecture said the final toll would be "in the tens of thousands".

More than half the 17,000 population of one coastal town, Minamisanriku, was unaccounted for, said Miyagi prefecture police chief Naoto Takeuchi.

"There's no doubt the number of fatalities will be in the tens of thousands," he said.

2. There is no way it couldn't be high. How can whole towns come up missing
and your estimate was hundreds or a thousand? I'm sure those were confirmed dead, but I should think their loss would be closer to...I can't even type it. Do the numbers.

8. The Japanese are tsunami-averse.
Nothing on earth can motivate an American to scramble like an earthquake can to the Japanese people.

So I hold out hope.

But, the numbers of missing are quite frightening. In some places the shaking never really stopped, which will inhibit people from moving/escaping.

3. This is a terrible headline
and I don't fault you, JanDutchy. You're just quoting the Australian. But holy crap! I thought some monstrous calamity happened while I slept. Thankfully it's only a bad writer using the subjunctive case poorly.

It might happen yet, though. :scared:

10. How Come Nobody Has Yet Blamed The Gays For Japan's Earthquake + Tsunami?
Pat Robertson blamed us for Haiti. Some other religious zealots blamed us for New Zealand's earthquake. But here we are, WHOLE HOURS after an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the shore of Japan, sending 20-foot tsunamis crashing into the east coast of the country and to all points beyond (including Hawaii), and I haven't received a single tweet personally attributing blame for this horrific natural disaster on me and my kind. C'mon, CBN: Put somebody on the airwaves to explain how this is all the fault of fags!

The reason is simply this.

And G´d and his Snage spoke according to this cartoon-Genesis, but the spoken words followed bij deads - `Dabar` - were withold after Crowley was sacked.

`See the days are cumming that you will not be re-elected´ the prophet Hillary spoke.

Obáma asked G´d , please one more period.

G´d said, allright My Son the Change and Chances must be For-Ever.

One advise I give you.

Don´t burn yourselve on Bushes, because the ground on which you are praying is holy!

4. From the pictures I've seen,
this is more the figure I sadly would have expected. When authorities first said 100's, maybe 1000, I thought the number was unrealistic.

12. I think the Japanese government
is purposely understating the numbers and the nuke problem, to avoid panic among the people, but in the information age, that's not likely to be successful.
