Germany hails Arab League backing for no-fly zone in Libya

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Sunday hailed the Arab League's backing for a no-fly zone in revolt-hit Libya but restated Berlin's reservations about such a move and called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council.

"I welcome the clear stand of the Arab League on the crimes of the (Moamer) Kadhafi regime," he told reporters.

Westerwelle called on the UN Security Council to meet "as soon as possible to take a fresh look at the situation in Libya".

4. You touch upon a good point, with all their oil and all the defense hardware the
Arab League has amongst themselves, why don't they just do their own NFZ operation?

6. Is the Arab League still willing to lead this?
This really needs to be Arab and Muslim lead. Otherwise it is another generation of hate against western nations and non-Muslims for the overthrow of the Muslim leader of a populist revolution. That is exactly how it will be seen by many in the middle east if the western nations lead this.

7. Precisely
We need to limit our involvement to humanitarian aid and let the Arab League establish the No Fly Zone or whatever they want.

8. It is true. If the US is seen leading anything, it will have adverse consequences.
They are not saying so now, but if the US were seen as responsible and Gaddafi was overthrown, then the same people clamoring for intervention now would be pining away for the old days and condemning the US. The days of US big brother should be behind humanity now.

9. Why do you keep on bringing religion into it?
I find it really disturbing that you continue to bring Muslims into yr posts about this.
