Bird flu case confirmed in Chiba; culling of 35,000 birds begins

Japan Today
Monday 14th March, 01:30 AM JST

CHIBA — Avian influenza infection was confirmed Sunday among chickens at a poultry farm in Chiba city, marking the first such case in the Kanto region centering on Tokyo, the Chiba prefectural government said.

Local authorities began culling about 35,000 birds at the farm and restricted the movements of another 869,000 birds being raised within a 10-kilometer radius of the farm in question.

‘‘This is a very severe situation as damage from the huge earthquake is also serious,’’ Chiba Gov Kensaku Morita said at a press conference, referring to the powerful quake that struck northeastern and eastern Japan on Friday.

1. On one hand this is surreal. OTOH what is happening is the end product of
capitalism. It isn't responsible for earthquakes however it is responsible for nuclear corporations and agri business with its factory farms placing profit before safety.

2. Yours is an astute analysis
It's sad and it's awfully disturbing, but really this earthquake/tsunami and its aftermath reveals the terrible meeting place between the inhumane quest for profit and the sacrifice of humane values. Just as the wave washed over the buildings and man made structures, nature will wash over our profit seeking construction and lay us low. I just hope that not too many innocent lives are lost along the way.

4. One COULD argue that capitalism is responsible for earthquakes
The reason? Global warming and the melting of the ice caps throughout the world. Read about how the incredibly huge displacement of weight of ice and water is causing fluctuations of pressure on the earth's crust.

all over with H5N1. Israel, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam etc.
and some human cases here and there.
This is the last thing Japan needs.
