Reuters: FLASH: Radiation too high for normal work at control room of No.4 reactor of Fukushima Daiichi plant - Kyodo

Radiation hits dangerous levels at Japan plant control room
TOKYO, MARCH 15 | Tue Mar 15, 2011 8:13am EDT

TOKYO, March 15 (Reuters) - Radiation levels at the No. 4 reactor of Japan's earthquake-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear-power plant had become too high on Tuesday to conduct normal work from its control room, Kyodo news agency said.

Workers cannot stay long and are going in and out of the control room as well as monitoring from a different place, Kyodo said.

2. Is there a backup for this situation?
I would think that with all the redundancies built into nuclear plants (many of which have failed in Japan) there would also be a backup plan if the control rooms became contaminated, perhaps some kind of remote controls for just such an emergency. Does anyone know?

5. Russian nuclear body says meltdown at Fukushima possible
Russian state nuclear power corporation Rosatom on Tuesday said the No. 4, 5, and 6 reactors at Japan's quake-stricken Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant may be facing meltdowns.

Radiation levels have reached harmful levels around the plant after a hydrogen blast rocked reactor No. 2 on Tuesday, following similar explosions at reactors No. 1 and 3.

The other three reactors were shut down for maintenance before Friday's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami in the country's northeast.

..

"The fuel rods are not inside the reactor, they are in the spent rod pool, they are cool but they should also be doused with water," Kiriyenko said.

"We don't understand why this hasn't been done," he said, adding that this had triggered the fire at reactor No. 4.

6. Please don't forget that the plant operators are very brave men.
And can you imagine the stress they are under? I am not in favor of nuclear power, but also please remember they got hit by the mother of all double whammies.
