Pincus in WaPo: Briefing on Al Qaeda Included Specifics
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A387-2004Apr9.html

The classified briefing delivered to President Bush five weeks before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks featured information about ongoing al Qaeda activities within the United States, including signs of a terror support network, indications of hijacking preparations and plans for domestic attacks using explosives...

"It's not about letting 3,000 people be murdered - it's the LYING about it!"

Impeach!

1. I just don't know how clear the message had to be for the Bush
admin to figure out that we were going to be attacked...

did it have to be written in crayon?????

like Chile or something. (Don't they offer asylum to war criminals there?)

5. LIHOP has broken through!
It took forever for it to happen, a seeming lifetime. As usual when the going gets tough, Bush cowers in fear.

Come back and take the heat you bastard!

6. Really curious about this "leak"
Comes out in the Guardian earlier today, then the NYTimes, the WaPo and all OVER the internet.

Thing just reeks of orchestrated leak. Only question is, who? Bob Kerry started leaking it during the Condi extravaganza--could be him? Or could it be the disgruntled CIA operatives we keep wishing we'd hear a lot more from? Maybe.

I did have one thought, but I'm starting to discount it. To wit, that it's actually an attempt to spread the damage out a bit and is a set-up for a prepared WH rejoinder, they having recognized that releasing the thing is inevitable. "Hey, the document talks about 'high explosives' not airplanes! How were we to know!"

But I'd prefer to think it's one of the first two.

7. I'm Not Sayin' ...
... I'm just sayin' (or repeatin' what a friend of mine said):

Name the last three Presidents who pissed off the CIA.

Kennedy ... Nixon ... Dubya.

Can you connect the dots or do you have some sagebrush to clear?

I've been waiting for them to get even. This has to be the first time I ever supported the CIA. Gawd, how surreal is that?

16. Hey, welcome to DU Joe!
Hope you stick around. And yeah, that's an interesting point. The family Bush may be well known to the CIA, but Dubya and Daddy are very different guys, too, and I'm not sure how far that loyalty would protect the Dimson, specially when he gets to doing things like outing agents.

8. Rice, under oath, characterized it as a 'historical' document (yesterday)
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 11:51 PM by gbwarming
Not a warning. That little fib didn't hold up for long.

Edit:
BEN-VENISTE: Isn't it a fact, Dr. Rice, that the August 6th PDB warned against possible attacks in this country? And I ask you whether you recall the title of that PDB?

RICE: I believe the title was, Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States.

Now, the ...

BEN-VENISTE: Thank you.

RICE: No, Mr. Ben-Veniste ...

BEN-VENISTE: I will get into the ...

RICE: I would like to finish my point here.

BEN-VENISTE: I didn't know there was a point.

RICE: Given that _ you asked me whether or not it warned of attacks.

BEN-VENISTE: I asked you what the title was.

RICE: You said, did it not warn of attacks. It did not warn of attacks inside the United States. It was historical information based on old reporting. There was no new threat information. And it did not, in fact, warn of any coming attacks inside the United States.

actually say that the memo didn't warn of attacks within the US? She didn't say airplanes.

10. The article also says the memo will be redacted and delayed

White House officials, after indicating Thursday that the briefing document could be declassified within a day, announced yesterday that they were delaying any release until at least next week.

"We are actively working on declassification and are not quite ready to put it out," said Sean McCormack, a spokesman for the National Security Council. He attributed the delay to "unprecedented activity" needed to prepare for public release the article from the Aug. 6, 2001, President's Daily Brief (PDB), the daily report of significant new intelligence and analysis provided the chief executive and his most senior national security advisers.

17. How long could it possibly take to
declassify and redact 1-1/2 pages. bush's briefings are never more than 2 pages (came out a long time ago that he wanted them to be short-no more than 2 pages) and they've had all this time to cover whatever they can - hopefully someone out there knows (who will tell) every word in that briefing.

15. The Timing of this leak makes sense to me. First they let Condi perjure
herself. Then they release the truth. Gotcha! I wonder if they'll do the same with Cheney/Bush testimony?

22. I don't think Condi perjured herself.
Perjury is based on (provably false) statements of fact, not opinion. Remember, Clinton was NOT charged or found guilty of perjury, despite the mindless blatherings of the reichbots. He was cited for contempt - misleading statements.

She was careful enough to phrase her disinformation in the form of characterizations and opinions. I was attuned to this while watching and that 'care' was key to seeing the degree to which she was spinning disinformation.

It remains to be seen whether anyone testifying before the Commission will be cited for contempt. I rather doubt it.
