More than 1,000 protest Snyder’s tax plan at Capitol

Lansing — Shouts of "It's not fair!" echoed from the walls of the Capitol building in Lansing this morning where more than 1,000 people rallied against Gov. Rick Snyder's plan to tax pensions and cut tax credits.

The rally was organized by AARP Michigan, but hundreds of seniors were joined by others protesting Snyder's plan to eliminate tax credits for the poor and cut funding for K-12 schools and higher education.

Tunes from The Turtles and The Mamas and the Papas blared from a loudspeaker as activists in their 60s, 70s and 80s unloaded from buses. Steve Benkovsky, who's in charge of the Capitol facility and grounds, estimated about 1,100 people attended.

The protesters carried signs that read "The Nerd has become a bully" and "Shared sacrifice? Where is it Nerd?" — a jab at Snyder, whose campaign slogan was "One Tough Nerd." . . .

Wednesday's rally will be even bigger, but good on the seniors for today. Love the music.

Snyder is another new GOP governor, and more bad news.

3. "Didn't vote at all" iis the biggest problem.

0Of course, Richy Ricky basically bought his way into office, and misguided frustration with Granholm didn't help. Although she didn't stick up for herself like she should have, I believe history will be more kind to her that you might think.

2. Didn't go today, but my sign I'll be holding in Lansing tomorrow ...
will be my yard sign for Virg Bernero, who ran against Snyder. Snyder gave Virg the name "angry mayor" Jeesh. Virg spoke passionately about the issues. Now the people of Michigan are angry at the Nerdy Natzi.

5. I could see it coming, as Snyder coasted to victory. Virg would have been great.
The darkness is falling over Michigan, as it is in Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio and so many other states.

This must be fought.

7. Love Virg
He always seemed so passionate about Michigan & her people. I followed him a number of years ago & he really impressed me. All I could do was inform friend's & family about him as our living in Arizona now could not vote for him. Kick him & his cronies to the curb Michiganders!

8. My Conservative Mother
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 03:28 PM by Johnny2X2X
Let me start by saying that my Mom is the nicest sweetest, and most honest person I know. But, she's been hoodwinked by Limbaugh for years. Now that her and my Father are retired they are living off my dad's GM pension. She is furious that Governor Snyder wants to tax it. Well mom I said, you've bought into this whole line about "us and them" from the Right for so long, as in we are hard working, we pay our share, they don't work, they don't pay their fair share, they are lazy. All of these years she thought she was part of the "us" group having no idea that she is "them" to the Republicans. They are now saying they (my parents) don't contribute, they don't pay their fair share, they are lazy.

People need to realize that the Republicans only have respect for the rich. If you've worked your whole life and didn't become rich, they think it's because you are lazy and they think you are a burden. My folks worked their whole lives, they did everything they were supposed to do, now they are being asked to lower their standard of living so that Corporations can enjoy tax breaks. All of these tea party sheep have no idea that half the signs they are carrying that denigrate the poor are actually referring to the sign holders themselves as far as their party is concerned.

When will middle class Republicans/Tea Partiers start to realize that if they aren't rich their own party considers them the enemy?
