Conflicting messages appear in the effort to buy iodide tablets

The fear that a nuclear cloud could float from the shores of Japan to the shores of California has some people making a run on iodine tablets. Pharmacists across California report being flooded with requests.

State and county officials spent much of Tuesday trying to keep people calm by saying that getting the pills wasn't necessary, but then the United States surgeon general supported the idea as a worthy "precaution."

U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin is in the Bay Area touring a peninsula hospital. NBC Bay Area reporter Damian Trujillo asked her about the run on tablets and Dr. Benjamin said although she wasn't aware of people stocking up, she did not think that would be an overreaction. She said it was right to be prepared.

16. I don't know, are they expecting earthquakes in Michigan and Switzerland
anytime soon?

Or could this be an emotional response to the latest urban legend?

Will it be iodine today and ammo tomorrow...?

17. They weren't "expecting" one in Japan, either
or, for that matter, in Philadelphia, which experienced a minor one in the early seventies.

But that, in any case, is not the point.

No "earthquake" is needed for radiation to spread.

"Iodine today and ammo tomorrow"?

You seem to be trying to make some clever, "urbane"

sort of remark, but I haven't the foggiest notion of what you are talking about

and frankly, I don't think you do either.:eyes:

19. They knew they lived in an earthquake prone region...
That's not the same as "expecting" it.

12. I live downwind of a nuke plant within 100 miles.
I have kept KI tablets by my side as well as my family's side for many years. It is right to be prepared. I hope I never have to use them. If I must, I have them. I agree with the Surgeon General.

13. These aren't magic anti-radiation pills
All they will do is prevent your thyroid from absorbing any radioactive iodine you ingest. As someone else said, the same effect can be had by not drinking milk.

Unfortunately.

20. Point well taken.........
...but that doesn't exactly make major headlines now....does it? (In our current dumbed-down society?) After all, isn't it the wish of the "powerful media giants that be" to attempt to not only incite but in fact obscure these very facts?

Yeah. Oh yeah. I smell the coffee alright..don't you?

(By the way, how are you J?)

14. Causes cancer and tumors in test animals. Potassium Iodate is much safer.
I bought a few bottles after 9-11 (very long shelf life) and it's still available from http://kio3.com/ (well when they get it back in stock... let them supply Japan first!!!)

You can learn about the differences here:

http://www.survivalblog.com/2008/06/letter_re_potassium_iodide_ver_1.html

You can also make your own KIO3 capsules using supplies from here (sold out at the moment):

http://purebulk.com/

General capping instructions are here:

http://www.basskilleronline.com/cappingsupplements.shtml

And here's some more specific instructions (you have to scroll down the page a bit or search the page for "capping":
