Deborah DelisleEmpowered by a new presence on the state school board, backers of Gov. John Kasich today forced out Ohio's state superintendent of education.

A tearful Deborah Delisle resigned this morning.

"Last Friday it was made known to me by two members of the governor's staff that my tenure was limited," Delisle said during a board meeting today. "They said they have the votes to replace me."

1. Got to home school the kids or send them to private christian schools ...
.... which will get state money as vouchers.

John Kasich is a nightmare.

8. This is tragic for the state of Ohio
Ohio helped to build the nation w/ men & women who were products of public schools
& colleges but kasich and company are ripping the guts out of our future. In the 1960s
Jim Rhodes a very conservative republican governor set about making sure that there
was a tech school or public university w/ in 50 miles of everybody in Ohio .... and it worked
and Ohio was the envy of the nation ..... and know w/ the jobs gone overseas, the unions
busted, and the schools a mere shell of what they once were ...... I weep for the state.

BTW But that will not stop Kasich & company from looting every last nickel from the state.

4. The School Board battle in Ohio 20+ years ago is why I became a Democrat..
Edited on Tue Mar-15-11 08:01 PM by SharonAnn
I left the Republican Party shortly after Reagan was elected and appointed James Watt to head the Department of the Interior(?), the department in charge of our national parks.

I thought of myself as one of those famous "Independents".

Then, when I was living in Ohio, the Religious Right mounted a sneak attack on Ohio's State School Board, to return "GOD to the schools", etc. I realized that these people are truly scary. And I watched their debates before the election and they lied through their teeth about their goals and their intentions. Good Christians, all of them. Right!

So, I decided that being neutral wasn't enough. I had to sign up and become a Democrat and so I did. And I have never voted for anyone but a Democrat since, have served on the Executive Committee of our local party, run for office twice, and donated more than I probably can afford to liberal/progressive Democrats everywhere and even to some Blue Dogs when they had a good chance of beating a Republican.

Maybe this kind of "waking up" could be happening to a lot of people who've been "believing what they say" instead of "believing what they do". We could have a lot more Democrats in the coming months/years.

We should all be frightened of the Republicans and the Religious Right. They're truly scary.

6. You are right on the mark
Look this is what the Christian Zeolots and Rightwing hacks have done and we really weren't paying attention. Now most schoolboards are infected with people that can't think their way out of a box let alone school curriculum etc.

This should be our movement, we need to all start looking in our districts and find out when these local elections are happening. We need to get on these boards and kick the loons out.

7. Teabaggers will be going after every school board seat!
Once SB5 is passed, school boards and not the state will set the teacher's salary.

9. She must do what she thinks is right.
But I would have MADE the bastards vote to throw me out!

But I'm sort of a disagreeable SOB.

Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin - I'm starting to think someone is going to get hurt.

10. she should not have been too surprised....

Governor's Choice....

According to the Ohio Constitution, Delisle serves at the discretion of the board, but former Gov. Ted Strickland had a strong say in her hiring in 2008. He was fiercely critical of Delisle's predecessor, Susan Tave Zelman, who eventually resigned.

Delisle, who had headed the Cleveland Heights-University Heights school district for more than four years, said in her letter that she was told Friday by Gov. John Kasich's staff that her tenure "was coming to an end."

"Specifically, I was informed that if I chose not to create an exit strategy, I would soon be replaced by a majority vote of the State Board of Education," she wrote. "Thus, I intend to resign effective April 30, 2011, in order to ensure that this issue does not become a distraction to the important educational issues facing the state of Ohio."

Last month Kasich appointed Robert Sommers, a former charter school executive with a background in vocational education, to lead his Office of 21st Century Education. At that time Kasich's spokesman said the governor's new education adviser would work on a "parallel track" with Delisle.
