4. Reminds me of my trip to Detroit in 1986
I traveled with my husbands cousin who lived on the South Side of Chicago where you really should not go out at night. I was going to go alone to do some genealogy but he insisted it wasn't safe to go to Detroit in the daytime according to other cousins who lived there.

I had been doing genealogy for quite some time. The first thing I requested was a death certificate for 1948, definitely could not be for identity theft or insurance fraud. We were ushered into a room for a 30 minute interview as to who we were and why we were there. I got that death certificate but was unable to get a marriage certificate** for the same time despite having certified death certificates for the couple involved who were direct ancestors of my husbands cousin, same name.

I have searched in many states, north and south and never run into a wall like I did in Detroit.

**The original marriage certificate was in a safe deposit box in Chicago it was inventoried. There were two old watches that did not work and nothing else but papers. Estate lawyer there dragged out the simple estate for 3 years and did not pay the fee on the box $10 a year and the person who was helping us at the bank retired about 14 months before the estate settled and the bank just destroyed all papers in the box after two years. Including some bible pages from the mid 1800's south, African American family, irreplaceable. We offered to pay the bank for the box when we found out that the lawyer was not paying but that was rejected by the bank. Lawyers!

5. Crap

Getting most of the police unions onboard was critical here in Madison. Also, and maybe more important, the sheer force of numbers prevented the police from safely 'arresting' 10 or 20 times more protestors than there were officers. Once our occupation dropped to below a few hundred, we lost the space.

on edit:

Also, we have a clause in our state constitution that requires public access during any time that legislative work is being done. The Democrats kept a hearing open all night the first few nights, allowing the protestors to remain legally the first day or so.
