Scientists Project Path of Radiation Plume
Source: NYTimes

A United Nations forecast of the possible movement of the radioactive plume coming from crippled Japanese reactors shows it churning across the Pacific, and touching the Aleutian Islands on Thursday before hitting Southern California late Friday.

Get Science News From The New York Times » Health and nuclear experts emphasize that radiation in the plume will be diluted as it travels and, at worst, would have extremely minor health consequences in the United States, even if hints of it are ultimately detectable. In a similar way, radiation from the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 spread around the globe and reached the West Coast of the United States in ten days, its levels measurable but minuscule.

The projection, by the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization, an arm of the United Nations in Vienna, gives no information about actual radiation levels but only shows how a radioactive plume would probably move and disperse.

9. On Sunday, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it expected that no “harmful levels
"On Sunday, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it expected that no “harmful levels of radioactivity” would travel from Japan to the United States “given the thousands of miles between the two countries.” "

....

"The forecast assumes that radioactivity in Japan is released continuously and forms a rising plume. It ends with the plume heading into Southern California and the American Southwest, including Nevada, Utah and Arizona. The plume would have continued eastward if the United Nations scientists had run the projection forward. "

2. And CNN just was saying the wind will spin off to the north pole!
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 10:18 PM by sce56
When my rad kit gets here I will be monitoring the level of radiation coming down.

These are just like the ones I trained on back in the Army! And I don't think it is crazy to go all out like this I've seen some of the things the Govt lies about I have been in SM1 in Virgina.

7. Final proof CNN is psyops from 2001 at least. I love the detector, is it...
...difficult to operate and, especially, outside of a power source is there any other part of it which needs regular replacement?

18. Simple and uses D cell batteries if I remember correctly
The small pens are dosimeters and the square box is for calibrating & resetting.

24. Not exactly a geiger counter...
Edited on Thu Mar-17-11 09:21 AM by truthisfreedom
That "Radiological Survey Meter" is for post-atomic bomb attacks. It operates on a scale that's way above what a geiger counter detects. You'll likely not detect anything measurable with that meter. The dosimeters are useful if you're hanging around high-level radiation and want to check your exposure daily, but none of that stuff will detect any radiation coming from Japan. You need a sensitive geiger counter to pick up the tiny trace amounts of radiation coming across the ocean. Look at it this way... that stuff is like a magnifying glass. A geiger counter is like a microscope.

btw, I have that complete kit... it was $50 post 9-11 too! There's thousands of those available from old CD neighborhood fallout shelters from the 50s and 60s.

8. I'm also in L.A.
I checked the dosimeters on E Bay and they were about 65 dollars. Not that knowing you've been nuked will help any.

Got duck tape?

10. Which is it..."extremely minor health consequences"
or... couldn't "present any risk to the american public" OR "it is very unlikely that there would be any harmful impacts"??? I would like to know what constitutes "extremely minor health consequences" especially for those who already have health issues, pregnant women, children....

17. A little perspective and decorum, please.
It's the Test Ban Treaty. The whole point is to measure extremely small increases in the radiation level. It's a test of their system. It's embarrassing to see people panic about something barely measurable when so many in Japan have already died or lost their homes.

You would think they would have some divine message, but apparently their link has no connectivity at this point.

23. I live
I live within 80 miles of 2(TWO) nuclear power plants. I am afraid of something like what has happened in Japan happening here.

One of these plants sit right along the New Madrid Fault line and the other is right on an ocean beach (Gulf of Mexico).

As an aside, I check around and found that the entire stock of Iodide treatment/supplements are sold out and the Pharmacist appear to be scripted in their responses to queries regarding this.

:scary:
