Wisconsin Senators "Sell Out" to Corporate Interests as DC Crowds Pick Up the Chant: "Recall!"
by John Nichols

Wisconsin Republican state Senators, fresh from passing draconian anti-labor and privatization legislation, jetted into Washington, D.C., Wednesday night to collect tens of thousands of dollars in contributions from the one constituency group that approves of what Governor Scott Walker and his GOP allies are doing: corporate lobbyists.

But if Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and Joint Finance Committee co-chair Alberta Darling thought they could get away from the mounting campaign to remove Republican state senators and shift control of the chamber to the Democrats -- creating a check and balance on Walker -- they were mistaken.

Outside the offices of the BGR Group -- the "B" stands for Barbour, as in Mississippi Governor and potential GOP presidential candidate Haley -- as many as 1,000 workers, students, union activists and allies filled the streets of downtown Washington. Many surged into the building where the senators met with lobbyists who paid as much a $5,000 to "host" the gathering to thank the Wisconsin Republicans.

They DC protesters chanted many of the same unions slogans that have been heard at mass protests in Wisconsin. And they picked up a political slogan as well: "Recall!"

6. Going to DC to collect money from lobbyists is SHAMEFUL, almost as
SHAMEFUL as taking away public employee workplace rights.

I'm glad they didn't get away to DC without being tailed by lots of DC protesters.

7. Help please!!! Any Cheesehead DUer
If there are any DUers in Wisconsin, can you help to update the situation there?

According to my hometown newspaper (), Dane County DA Ismael Ozanne filed a legal challenge to the union busting law. To quote the newspaper: "Judge Maryann Sumi was scheduled to hold a hearing on the lawsuit this morning."

Anyone have any news of the outcome of it???

9. Could the court resolution be delayed enough so it is after the recalls?
If there's a legitimate court challenge to this newer legislation, might it have to go to the Wisconsin Supreme Court to be decided on? Seems that if that were the case it might have to wait until at least after the upcoming Supreme Court election there? And then hopefully the court won't decide until after the recall election, so that the Republicans don't try to ram something through again before those recalled leave office?

12. Wisconsin judge to decide emergency block on union law Friday

March 17, 2011 (AP) — A Wisconsin judge says she’ll decide on Friday whether to issue an emergency order blocking publication of the state’s new collective bargaining law.

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne (oh - zaan’) filed a lawsuit on Wednesday accusing Republican legislative leaders of violating Wisconsin’s open meetings law during the rushed run-up to a Senate vote on the measure last week. He wants a judge to block publication of the law so the case can be heard before the measure takes effect.

Judge Maryann Sumi had originally scheduled a hearing for Thursday morning, but pushed it back to Friday. Ozanne says he has as many as 20 witnesses lined up.
