Radiation From Japan Detected At O’Hare Airport
Source: chicago cbslocal

CHICAGO (CBS) — Trace amounts of radiation from Japan have been detected in Chicago.

As WBBM Newsradio 780′s Mike Krauser reports, travelers coming in from Japan on Wednesday triggered radiation detectors at O’Hare as they passed through customs. Only very small amounts of radiation were detected.

“We are aware of the radiation,” said Chicago Aviation Department spokesman Karen Pride. “We are adding screenings and precautionary measures.”

In one instance, radiation was detected in a plane’s air filtration system. Radiation was also found in luggage and on passengers on flights from Japan.

28. Being radioactive is the new normal haven't you heard?
that is some scary shit. we should NOT be playing around with this stuff. we clearly only understand it to the level necessary to exploit it. while i know this deal at the airport in chicago isn't supposedly dangerous - this is FAR from normal and far from ok.

3. It's not like it spreads like the flu. It is being dispersed, just like it's supposed to.
Edited on Thu Mar-17-11 01:35 PM by cbdo2007
The only thing being "spread" here is fear and panic.

This is like the republicans with terrorism.

6. They are telling people in Tokyo
that levels are safe. I don't think we have good information due to panic control. I would like good info instead of snark or obfuscation.

14. Of course there is radiation in Tokyo and planes from Japan....
but it isn't helpful for people to announce the first time radiation hits their city, like they did with the Swine flu or the Bird flu, because the radiation isn't going to spread when it gets here.

This isn't good info, it's scaring the shit out of people all over the country unnecessarily. Now idiots all over the midwest are going to think radiation is getting closer because it's in Chicago.

23. You think it is better to keep the population
in the dark? To censor the news? I prefer reporting of what is happening. I don't need any sugar coating or censorship "for my own good". I don't need to be managed.

If y'all like nuclear energy and radiation so much, just keep it to yourselves, OK?

Because I don't want that shit anywhere near me or my kids.

wearing styish ray-an wayfarer sunglasses made famous by the blues brothers. when asked why she was leaving japan, and noting that as a symbol of man's destruction of the envornonment that she had a duty to stay, she angrilly retorted "reading 'atlass shrugged' by ayn rand changed my life. i'm tired of being told what i exist for. i have no purpose, but to live for myself. i find america is a place where i can do that and reach my potential. i am confident that in time my long tail and destructive tendencies will be less noticed"

22. I know. Thought about that, but damn, I am not seeing a good outcome

from this, so humor may be in really short supply over the next few weeks. And with radiation levels rising they are telling people with no food or water supplies to seal themselves in their home. We may just be on the edge of a another major disaster.

What I really find not funny is that they would board people on an international flight, from a city where
there is a known nuclear emergency, exposing others, irradiating the plane, etc. Is anyone thinking?

Is the denial that deep? Is it so bad that it kept TEPCO from taking the most dramatic steps early to save the reactors?

I have seen several things here that make me wonder about this response. I would really like to think they are doing the best
that can be done, but arguments over whether a damn tank of fuel rods is covered with water?

26. All the international rich banksters grabbed their private jets and flew out

of Japan a couple of days ago. Those rich elite not having private jets have been chartering private jets to get them out to Hong Kong. The private charter service is doing a boom business.

The rats are leaving the ship.

Seems they are also not seeing a good outcome.

18. Headline misleading in this one
Of COURSE a plane that flew from Japan to Chicago will have radiation - Japan has been irradiated.

It's not like the flu where you can 'catch radiation'

The headline makes it look as if radiation spread from Japan all the way to Chicago via the wind.
