Gaddafi Warns Of 'No Mercy' In Rebel City

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has warned Libyan rebels in their stronghold of Benghazi that his forces are coming and there would be no mercy for those who fight them.

But the head of the rebel council, based in the country's second city, said the opposition would stand firm and would not be deterred by the dictator's threats.

The rebel fighters have been called to man their posts, according to rebel radio, and there are reports of loud explosions followed by anti-aircraft gunfire in Benghazi.

It comes as http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Politics/Video-Libya-UN-Security-Council-Votes-In-Favour-Of-A-No-Fly-Zone/Article/201103315954268">the UN Security Council approved a no-fly zone over Libya and authorised 'all necessary measures' to protect civilians from attacks by the Gaddafi regime.

"The matter has been decided ... we are coming," he said in a radio address on Thursday.

The Libyan leader called pro-democracy fighters in Benghazi "armed gangsters" and urged residents to attack them, saying: "You all go out and cleanse the city of Benghazi.

"We will track them down, and search for them, alley by alley, road by road ... Massive waves of people will be crawling out to rescue the people of Benghazi, who are calling out for help, asking us to rescue them. We should come to their rescue."

He pledged to respond harshly to UN-sponsored attacks. "If the world is crazy, we will be crazy too," he said.

More, including video of his 20 minute psychotic rant which must have helped make up the minds of the Security Council. The final nail, as it were: http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2011/03/201131720311168561.html

2. I guess there's no going back now.
Gaddafi has closed the door to any kind of negotiation. Now it has to be a fight to the death, and in the long run, I don't like Gaddafi's chances.

10. I really don't have an answer for it.

Siding with any dicktator is beyond me.

Give the people a little help to be free, but let Europe take the responsibility this time.

13. Mo is flipping out - "I'll attack passenger jets"
I'll attack passenger jets, warns Gadafi

Colonel Gadafi threatened retaliatory attacks on passenger aircraft in the Mediterranean on Thursday night if foreign countries launched air strikes against Libya.

"Any foreign military act" would expose "all air and maritime traffic in the Mediterranean Sea" as targets for a counter attack, the Libyan regime said. The warning was issued after America formally backed a joint British and French initiative for a no-fly zone over Libya and other military action against Col Gadafi's regime.
