US army says kills 15 insurgents in Northern Iraq

<<"A patrol from 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment was engaged by 12 assailants in a truck with a rocket-propelled grenade near Al Thubat," a U.S. statement said. "The patrol returned fire with a missile, destroying the truck and killing all 12 assailants."

U.S. forces also killed three people it said were insurgents after clashes broke out at a demonstration in front of Mosul city hall on Friday, the statement said.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed in the city of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, after the clashes.

Most of the recent fighting in Iraq has been between foreign troops and either Shi'ite militants in southern and central Iraq or Sunni insurgents in Baghdad and the west.

But there have been demonstrations in support of those fighting the occupation in many towns to the north, several of which have turned violent. Hospital officials say some of those killed were civilians.>>

3. Darwin in action
Shooting at US forces while huddled together in a truck is a one way ticket to Allah. Perhaps these were suicide militants that failed their training?

4. No chance that the missile could have been fired from behind...
...the truck, and the truck was in the way of the return fire?

Hmmm.

5. I certainly hope that none of this involves Kurds.
The Kurds have been relatively patient and hospitable because the British no-fly zone kept Saddam out of their hair for a long time. If they are shooting at us or we are shooting at them, that will mean that anti-coalition violence is erupting from all major Iraqi ethnic/religous groups.

If this violence involves Sunni Arabs, then the violence is just a continuation of what's happening in the south, not that it's a good thing.

6. Isn't an "insurgent" nowadays anyone on the streets after curfew?
I've been reading some reports from Iraqi citizens at the news sites -- sounds ugly. Some of them long for the days of Saddam again.
