Libya: Mohammed "Mo" Al Nabbous, founder of Benghazi webcast "Libya Alhurra TV," killed in firefight

Via LibyaFeb17.com and via the Twitter updates from NPR's Andy Carvin, terrible news that the brave citizen journalist Mohammed Al-Nabbous, known to fans as "Mo," was killed last night.

From currently available information, it appears Mo was killed in a firefight, while recording.

Mo created and operated the widely-viewed live video channel http://www.livestream.com/libya17feb">Al Hurra TV on Livestream, broadcasting raw footage and commentary from Benghazi, Libya.

Andy Carvin writes:

"Mohammad Nabbous was my primary contact in Libya, and the face of Libyan citizen journalism. And now he's dead, killed in a firefight. A few hours ago he went out to record some more audio and was caught in a firefight. (http://www.livestream.com/libya17feb/video?clipId=pla_413c69cd-9914-493e-a77d-7e22c7c019c8&utm_source=lslibrary&utm_medium=ui-thumb">Link). Audio stops 6:30 into it. For several hours we heard rumors that he had been shot but we didn't want to say anything until we knew for sure. And now I can't stop thinking, what if those French planes began to arrive 12 hours ago. Would Mo be alive now? I just don't know."

Nabbous' wife, speaking on his Livestream channel earlier:

"I need everyone to do as much as they can for this cause. They are still shooting. More people will die. Don't let Mo's life go in vain."

Libya Live Blog - March 19
By Al Jazeera Staff in Africa

4:43pm
Al Jazeera just received the following email from a member of Libya AlHurra Television, which has been hosting a livestream that Mohammad Nabbous was providing from Benghazi.

"I am sorry to inform you that Mohammed Nabbous, the founder of Libya AlHurra TV, was killed this morning while reporting on the attacks from the pro-Gaddafi forces. He touched the hearts of many with his bravery and indomnitable spirit. He will be dearly missed and leaves behind his young wife and unborn child.

...

Mo's objective in founding Libya AlHurra was to help his countrymen by getting the word out about what is happening in Libya. Please honor this courageous man and help him realize his dream by using his footage in your broadcasts
".

The audio from Nabbous' last report from Benghazi is embedded (at the link) below.

4:34pm
Mohammed Nabbous, a pro-democracy opposition activist who Al Jazeera has been in touch with through phone interviews and who has also provided us with footage from Benghazi, has been shot and killed today.

Nabbous shared video from Libya through his website, http://www.livestream.com/libya17feb">here.

From: http://blogs.aljazeera.net/live/africa/libya-live-blog-march-19

On top of the feelings of sadness at the loss of this very brave soul, being an expectant father myself, I found the fact he leaves behind an unborn child exceptionally moving.

Benghazi TV Reporter Mohammed Nabbous shot dead by Gaddafi forces

Published Mar 19, 2011

"Mo's objective in founding Libya AlHurra was to help his countrymen by getting the word out about what is happening in Libya", said the AlHurra TV representative. Mo supplied on-the-ground videos and analysis of the situation in Libya over the past weeks and continued doing as so as Benghazi bombing and tank invasions began on 18 and 19 March.

Mo was shot by Gaddafi forces and for awhile was in a critical condition. At 3pm CET Mohamed reportedly passed away. His wife announced his tragic death http://www.livestream.com/libya17feb/video?clipId=pla_9745ec21-c64d-440f-abe7-a412e7db456d&utm_source=lslibrary&utm_medium=ui-thumb">in a video on Libya Al-Hurra TV.

"I want to let know all of you know that Mohammed died for this cause and let's hope that Libya will become free", Mo's wife said through tears. "Thank you everyone. And let's not stop doing what we are doing until this is over. What he has started has got to go on, no matter what happens", she added. "I need everyone to just do as much as they can for this cause. Please keep the channel going and move every authority you have. They are still bombing, they are still shooting and more people are going to die. Don't let what Mo started go for nothing, people, make it worth it", she urged everyone assisting the network and the Libya cause.

Over the past hours, Mo courageously http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvUnVWvgkHI">reported via video and commentary the bombing of Benghazi power station and fuel tank explosion on 17 March, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7OtF3S5nvw&feature=youtu.be">Gaddafi forces firing missiles on Benghazi from near-by city Sultan on 18 March, http://www.youtube.com/user/luxylibyaalhura?feature=mhum">the destruction and civilian attacks by Gaddafi forces in the morning of 19 March, and the death of the youngest Gaddafi victims: 4 months-old and 5 year-old children killed, while sleeping in their bedroom by a missile in the morning of 19 March. "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olcv5dl5TkY">What if that was our house, what if that was our bedroom?", says Mo.
