African Union demands 'immediate' halt to Libya attacks
Source: AFP

NOUAKCHOTT — The African Union's panel on Libya Sunday called for an "immediate stop" to all attacks after the United States, France and Britain launched military action against Moamer Kadhafi's forces.

After a more than four-hour meeting in the Mauritanian capital, the body also asked Libyan authorities to ensure "humanitarian aid to those in need," as well as the "protection of foreigners, including African expatriates living in Libya."

It underscored the need for "necessary political reforms to eliminate the causes of the present crisis" but at the same time called for "restraint" from the international community to avoid "serious humanitarian consequences."

The panel also announced a meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on March 25, along with representatives from the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Conference, the European Union and the United Nations to "put in place a mechanism for consultation and concerted action" to resolve the Libyan crisis

1. Yes, everybody, it's a perfectly simple situation
History also teaches us that at times of great upheaval, many others seize the opportunity to redress their grievances or finish old business. In an increasingly interconnected, just-in-time-delivery world, widespread disruption can have dire consequences.

At the risk of sounding crass, I wonder what the Stock Market will do on Monday...

3. Tell that to the people of Misrata: The town is being razed to the ground RIGHT NOW by artillery.
Gadhafi's forces are destroying a whole town just out of spite. Not just to punish the population for aiding the rebels, but to show the other rebels what awaits them, their relatives and their hometowns.

There is only one peaceful solution that Gadhafi is willing to accept: The rebels give up and the country returns to status quo.

4. a body of nations that has ok'd gaddafi's bullshit for years
probably because they get some economic benefit from it--or the fact that they can use what gaddafi does to threaten their own peoples, steal elections, plunder the treasury and stay drunk with power.

They need to sit the hell down and stfu.

6. Im hardly surprised...
...that the African Dictators Club have a negative opinion on the bombing of a fellow dictator who's only crime is attempting to massacre those revolting proles. I expect the Arab League will keep a very low profile until there is some collateral damage at which point they will come down solidly in favor of Gaddafi.

7. Well that didn't take long!
The Arabs started to whine the moment the first bomb was dropped! How truly pathetic as well as disgusting.
