Libya: 'Air Strike Hits Gaddafi Compound'
Source: Sky News

An air strike has destroyed an administrative building at Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's residence, according to reports.

The news came as the White House said it did not recognise a ceasefire called by Colonel Gaddafi, and anti-aircraft fire continued in the skies above Tripoli.

The Libyan leader ordered armed forces to down weapons from 7.00pm, via a government spokesman at a press conference, but witnesses reported strong blasts and gunfire in Tripoli throughout the evening.

A 10 Downing Street spokesman responded to the Libyan announcement, following a meeting of the National Security Council, saying: "Everyone will recall that in recent days Colonel Gaddafi declared a ceasefire which was promptly violated.

1. Accord to my tv Gaddafi was not the target.
The compound is gigantic and they were aiming for the communication system from which he still has command and control.

How can the Colonel continue to call fake cease fires if he doesn't have a way to communicate?

5. Our military has not been given permission to target Gaddafi.
Don't know about the Brits, Italians or French.

JFTR - if he is taken out the French WILL take credit for it. Okay by me.

4. A lemon on CNN
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 07:57 PM by rabs

named Don Lemon was anchoring when the story broke.

He asked some retired military talking head if it could have been the "allies" who bombed the Gadaffi compound !!

Earlier, he said the AA fire over Tripoli "appeared" to be anti-aircraft fire.

Someone should tell this twit that if tracers are streaming from the ground up into the sky, one can be sure that it is anti-aircraft fire.

Then blitz wolfie came on and asked another retired military head whether Gadaffi would use the "200 tons of mustard gas."

Turned the TV off.

2. I guess that Ronald Reagan bio Obama read really got to him
He wants to finish the job, maybe:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_El_Dorado_Canyon

The attacks failed to kill Gaddafi. Forewarned by a telephone call from Malta's Prime Minister, Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici, that unauthorized aircraft were flying over Maltese airspace heading south towards Tripoli, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his family rushed out of their residence in the Bab al-Azizia compound moments before the bombs dropped. According to Giulio Andreotti (the 42nd Prime Minister of Italy) and Abdel Rahman Shalgham (Libya's Foreign Minister from 2000 until 2009), Italian politician Bettino Craxi was the person who actually warned Gaddafi.<12>

6. IIRC, both Obama and Hillary put Reagan on their respective lists of 10 Greatest Presidents Ever.
He sure would not have been on my list of 10 Greatest Presidents Ever.

12. I dunno, isn't this kind of stepping outside of the legal mandate?
I think it's pretty clear we are going for regime change, despite what Obama says.

I fear unforeseen consequences...

15. I would guess it was a "command and control" center
such as was the immediate target back in the first days of the Iraq war - which I was very much against, but military strategy proceeds according to the same logic regardless.

If you eliminate the ability of a leader to communicate with his military forces, you basically end the war. Gadhafi, like most old dictators on their way out, is very likely isolated already by his own paranoia, and can hardly trust his own armies. The whole murderous house of cards shouldn't last long; I just hope some measure of sanity is left there in Tripoli afterwards.
