Libya: Gaddafi may be targeted, UK ministers suggest

William Hague has said the goal of air strikes in Libya is to protect civilians - amid suggestions Col Muammar Gaddafi could be targeted.

The UK foreign secretary said he would not "speculate on the targets" but said it "all depends on how people behave".

The UN authorised "all necessary measures" to protect Libyan civilians.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has said it would be "unwise" to target Col Gaddafi but UK Defence Secretary Liam Fox has said it could be a possibility.

unless you are here in the UK at present you know that you cannot access our home channels - only world services. If for example you go for bbc.co.uk you definately don't get there - I've tried that from abroad and it don't work.

Liam Fox has sparked ructions in the coalition of countries fighting Colonel Muammar Gaddafi by suggesting he is a "legitimate target".

The Defence Secretary was directly contradicted by the US who stressed no one is "going after" the Libyan leader.

The UN resolution allows "all necessary measures" to protect Libyan civilians, but does not mention regime change and rules out a foreign occupation.

And a senior UK military source has now told Sky News that, as the head of the Libyan forces, Col Gaddafi is a "legitimate military target".

The Chief of the Defence staff, Gen Sir David Richards, says Colonel Gaddafi is 'absolutely not' a target for military action.

The head of Britain's armed forces has told the BBC that Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi is "absolutely not" a target for military action.

Gen Sir David Richards said that was "not allowed" under the UN resolution authorising military action to protect civilians in Libya.

Defence Secretary Liam Fox has said targeting Gaddafi could "potentially be a possibility" .

But the US Defence Secretary said that would be "unwise".
