Japan Aftershocks Rock Disaster Area (6.6, 6.4 and 6.6)
Source: AccuWeather

A series of three powerful quakes shook the sea floor off northeastern Japan on Tuesday.

Early reports showed no casualties or significant damage.

The quakes, striking in quick succession, measured magnitude 6.6, 6.4 and 6.6, respectively. Of these, one was centered within about 50 miles of the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on the northeastern Honshu coast.

The experts say that these are just aftershocks.. but I've been watching the activity off Japan and it's not decaying at the usual rate. After the past few fairly quiet days, this is alot of activity.

But I'm no expert, I'm probably just paranoid. I hope.

1. "Just aftershocks"
It doesn't really matter what they call them, they are still very large and can be very damaging. And now that you mention it, it doesn't seem to be calming down over there. You would think they would be decreasing in size and quantity somewhat by now.

3. Japan Earthquake Weekly record of Magnitude 5 + Aftershocks broken
I found this blog post, but it has no link to the info, so I can't verify yet.

http://onlyinjapan-myjapan.blogspot.com/2011/03/japan-earthquake-weekly-record-of.html
Monday, 21 March 2011
A record of 262 aftershocks of magnitude of 5 or more were registered in the seven days following March 11 quake. Included in this record is three aftershocks of 7+, one 7.5 and 49 aftershocks of 6 or more.

The Meteorological Agency has also lowered the likelihood of aftershocks measuring at least upper 5 within the next three days to 30-40% (uh oh):(

7. Thanks for the link...
It was a huge original quake so I guess large aftershocks should be expected. But it should also be expected that they would decrease. I just looked at the Iris Seismic Monitor and it's frightening.

2. I had heard that they still expected one large aftershock to occur
in the same area. I hope it quiets and stays that way. They have certainly had enough.

You're right, it's has not been decaying. And it really hasn't been very quiet. At least not for Honshu, Japan. And I think it's going to http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php">increase.

- What is more worrisome to me, is the 6.0 earthquake at the southern Mid-Atlantic ridge this morning.

12. There will probably be earthquakes in other places because
they tend to occur in clusters. When you see a large earthquake there is usually a higher frequency of earthquakes elsewhere.

13. I watch the quakes on USGS pretty regularly.....
...and as far as I've seen the Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge remains relatively quiet for the most part. You'd have to go all the way back to the http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_c00028vm_h.html">1990s to find a time when this areas was really active. And even then there are very few quakes at the 6.0 level.

6. They must be so used to earthquakes by now. No wonder
they are so calm during quakes...just another one of many....

8. Calm or resigned.
I can't imagine that the people in Japan have come out of this without a severe impact to their collective psyche. They must be living with a foreboding as to when the next big quake will come. Every trembler must have them wondering if this will lead to another 9+ magnitude disaster.

10. I wonder how much all these continued, rather large, aftershocks are
slowly degrading buildings constructed to withstand earthquakes.

11. Aftershocks can be expected for YEARS following the big events.
Or so they say.

Earthquakes, volcanoes....It's all cracking open, has been for millions of years.

14. info from the JMA..
Activities of Aftershock
The activities of aftershocks of "The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake" has been very active. As of 12:00 JST, 16 March, the aftershocks larger than magnitude 7.0 occurred 3 times, and those larger than 6.0 occurred 48 times. The largest aftershock occurred at 15:25 JST, 11 March (magnitude 7.5). The aftershocks have occurred in the large area off the coast of Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, and Ibaraki Prefectures. When compared to past cases, the activity of aftershocks is very high.

Outlook of Aftershocks

* Near the epicenter, maximum JMA Seismic Intensity of aftershocks may be 5- or higher.
* A strong aftershock may occur tsunami. Be cautious when a tsunami warning or advisory is issued.
* Estimating from the occurrence of aftershocks so far, the possibility of aftershocks with maximum JMA Seismic Intensity of 5+ or higher is 40% for the 3-day period from 12:00 JST, 16 March, followed by 20% for the 3-day period from 12:00 JST, 19 March to 12:00 JST, 22 March.

19. There were many earthquakes in the Fukushima Hamadori
Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 12:57 AM by Art_from_Ark
area this morning (Japan time) that occurred in less than one hour. It appears that the Fukushima Hamadori area includes the reactor complexes.

Magnitude 4.3

The blue circle just to the right of the red X is Iwaki City. The light blue circle just above that is near the nuclear complex

Magnitude 4.9

Same description as above

Magnitude 5.8

This time, Iwaki is the orange circle, and the area near the nukes is blue (meaning greater seismic intensity at both places)

Magnitude 6.0

This time, Iwaki is orange and the nuke areas are yellow

There is also a little information about another earthquake that originated in the same area during this time frame (a Magnitude 4.1, but there is no map), but there is no information about the locations or magnitudes of the other two (although they were most intense in the Fukushima Hamadori area)

Judgjing from the geographical coordinates they gave, the epicenter was just a stone's throw from my house, They're saying it was a Magnitude 4.7, but I swear it was a 6.
