More details to come. So sad. I have a friend who has family there. There are long lines for food and water, and it is running short. Power is intermittent.

3. I thought the same thing...
I'm no economist, but how is it that we would get milk from Japan?

Wouldn't it be cost-prohibitive to get milk from Japan, when we have dairy cows here?

I can understand some fruits and veggies, but not milk.

19. We don't. Only 4% of imported food is from Japan, according to news reports I've read.

2. But Chinese poisin, no problem.
:sarcasm:

because we all know we cannot "afford" to inspect foreign food coming in. That should be we cannot afford not to if you love children.

5. I cannot see Japan EXPORTING food right now
Because they will need it all.....

This is just a story to make you feel all warm and fuzzy about the FDA.

However - this ban could be in place for years....and perhaps years later - Japan will be exporting foodstuffs.

8. There's around here that states the radiation level is 1,600 times greater than normal.
I would hope that the FDA would pull their goods. This is our government acting as it should be - for our safety.

Don't we get Kobe beef from there, along with some specialty high-end gourmet items?

20. different part of Japan
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 08:31 PM by LupinSansei72
Kobe beef is grown in the Kansai area of Japan--essentially the central part of the country, so they're a good distance from Fukushima and Miyagi. And like you said in your post, Kobe beef is a high end gourmet food item, so it's not like you can just grab some at the local supermarket. I've seen various shows on the Food Network, in which kobe beef plates began around $80-$100 :eyes:

12. A question I have about trade, it seems like, person A 5000 miles away has some
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 07:41 PM by HysteryDiagnosis
beef and wants to sell it. Myself being person B, also have some beef and I want to sell it. I find someone 5 miles from person A and tell him I can give him a deal on my beef (plus shipping). Someone near me (person B) sees an ad for some cool beef from some country 5000 miles away and contacts the seller, he can get a great deal (plus shipping). Both beefs cross in the pacific/atlantic, unmeasurable amounts of fuel and logistical expenses are incurred and both parties get their beef.

Something about all of this is disconcerting to me and I cannot tell what it is, I know I am making a ridiculous scenario here but really, in some situations this must be exactly what is going on. I don't get it at all. Buying local should be the way it is all done but that is not how it's done, if I'm totally off base oh well, I'm tired and I am trying to fly on the wings of Lunesta... like the commercial said I could.

ON EDIT TO ADD: It's like if I wanted some rich Corinthian leather and I lived in Corinth, I wouldn't be searching the internet for it, the papers, trade magazines and the like, I'd get on my bicycle and go get some.

16. Why do we need the FDA it's just more big government hurting corporate profits
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 08:11 PM by GreenTea
Maybe I like radiation in my milk, I don't see the harm that's just hippie propaganda telling us food with radiation in it is bad for us because they just want to force organic foods on everyone....Why hurt established corporate businesses making profits with Japan?

Republicans have the right idea, destroy ALL government agencies and corporations will look out for us all - why would corporations want us unhealthy or dying if were dead we can buy their products - they want our business so it makes no sense.

And so what if China makes a synthetic rice made from plastics - only the poor are eating it - So why do we need the FDA to stop corporations from selling products they can make a profit on? That's just more of big government telling us what we can and can not eat.
