Hispanic population expected to exceed 50 million
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- U.S. Census Bureau demographic data to be released Thursday are expected to show that the Hispanic population of the United States has reached a new milestone, topping 50 million people, demographers told CNN.

The results are expected to show that Hispanics accounted for more than half of the nation's growth since 2000.

"The face of the country is changing," Jeffrey Passel, demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center, told CNN.

The non-Hispanic white population is staying the same, while the Hispanic and Asian populations are quickly growing, Passel said.

1. I'm Telling Ya... we need to GRAB this demographic and lock 'em in.
They WILL be the majority sooner or later. We MUST make sure they're DEMOCRATS. And that they STAY that way.

I was encouraged to see the reports lately that suggest the Catholic demographic tends to be surprisingly progressive (probably all that stuff about THE POOR). My concern is about the bad guys (and make no mistake, the republi-CONS and the teabaggers and the rest of 'em ARE the BAD GUYS. What they want is BAD FOR AMERICA except for that tiny sliver of ultra rich and corporate pirate America that makes up one tenth of one percent of the elites. You've gotta KNOW that they're trying to figure out how to appeal to Hispanics and turn them into republi-CON voters. The only way that appears even remotely likely is through religion. The Mormons are working on it at this very moment. They'll try to get 'em on things like abortion and gay marriage. They're gonna try, and try HARD. We have to be HYPER-VIGILANT!!!!!

CONSTANT VIGILANCE!!!!! That's what Mad-Eye Moody always warned Harry Potter and his friends, and for very good reason. It's good advice for all the rest of us facing the real-life Death Eaters.

5. Rick Perry took 38% of the Hispanic vote last year in the Texas gubernatorial election.
Texas is 38% Hispanic. Also, it was reported yesterday that for the first time in history the majority of students in Texas schools are Hispanic.

I've said for a long time Texas was a state were the Democratic party should have been paying more attention to it's future potential as a swing state. Instead they seem to letting the potential voters slip through their fingers by letting the Republicans control the message.

6. That might explain why The ReTHUGS in Congress are
raising all those social issues. I always wondered why they were doing this instead of "talking" about Jobs, jobs, jobs. Now I know...but I don't think it will work as they already put their foot in their mouth and turned Hispanics totally OFF. If this report had come out earlier you can bet they'd be all for immigration and giving Hispanics citizenship. Sorry eavesdropping ReThugs...you're too late!

19. Most Hispanics are what can be called "Christian Democrats"
Edited on Fri Mar-25-11 08:49 AM by meow2u3
They may be pro-life on abortion issues, but they're also pro-life across the board--on matters of poverty, immigration, social justice, plus most of them are anti-death penalty.

http://www.christiandemocratsofamerica.org/TheIssues.html

Warning to non-Christian DUers: please don't be offended by the Scripture quoting and other biblical reference, but despite the Scripture quoting, this group is not a bunch of wingnuts. I consider myself one of them. Non-Christians with good hearts are welcome, too; in other words, you don't have to be Christian to be a Christian Democrat.

To sum up, Christian Democrats reject the anything-goes mentality of the extreme left and the "shoot first and ask questions later--far later" mentality of the extreme right

8. i think it has more to do with the social issues
Hispanic tend to be extremely religious (mostly catholics) who are dead set against many of the social policies of the democratic party when it comes to abortion and gay marraige

9. Democrat spine.
Its not about having a spine, its about where some democrats in power's actual loyalties lie and the corporate media monopoly that killed the fairness doctrine, therefore controlling the message and hedging actual Dems with spines who speak against fascist appeals.

13. welcome here, and your insight is spot on, Div.
Therein lies the source of many problems. And, it explains the GOP's efforts to control the intertubes. We pose too much of a danger if we have access to information and communications.

Wait a sec....I'm one of them! SWEET. Heh...don't worry, I'll keep some of you around to do my gardening.

No, but seriously...it's not like we are some monolithic group that you guys can "get to vote Democratic". We are individuals with as much brains, and lack of brains, as all of you. We just speak Spanish....and make better food. lol.

I kind of find this "demographic" idea insulting. I often get this feeling that some white people think of themselves as individuals, but the rest of us as "groups" to convince and cajole.

17. no, i mean look at how the right wing denigrates La Raza and NAACP
and complain about how liberals play the "race card" even in legitimate acknowledgments of modern discrimination or inequality in society

16. In our part of the country, we call it the "reconquista."

and about the "demographic" idea ...

they used to call me a "minority."

My response was that I am a "majority of one." That tends to stump most gabachos.

20. The problem being- we need zero population growth at this point. GLOBALLY.
There seems to be NO consciousness among the majority of
Latino people I know about the pending disasters caused
by climate change and oil consumption.

Thank you Catholic Church for all your centuries of brainwashing.
Does the Pope intend to provide food, water and shelter to this
booming population?

I see them coming to high school, pregnant, with no hope for a future.

Their younger siblings come to school hungry and so we keep extra
packets of oatmeal and granola bars in our desks for them.

A large percentage of them are illegal and drop out in their
senior year because they can't meet the graduation requirement
for work study because they can't provide a social security card.
In the meantime, I watch them throw MOUNTAINS, literally TONS, of tax payer provided
school lunches away in the trash on a daily basis.

I don't care if Latino people want to live here, I just wish they
would practice birth control, as should the rest of the world.
If you can't care for your children- don't have them, and for God's sake
consider what sort of planet they will be living on in twenty years.

BHN, with flame suit on.
