Libyan anti-government rebels claim Gaddafi is using hitmen to carry out targeted killings.
Last Modified: 26 Mar 2011 04:26

Recently there have been numerous assassination attempts on leading rebels in their eastern stronghold of Benghazi.

Libyans fighting to depose Muammar Gaddafi say he is using hitmen - an invisible force - to carry out targeted killings.

Some documents have been found, detailing those set to be killed. And many more so-called 'Gadaffi lists' are thought to exist.

Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reports from Benghazi (video report at the link).

1. Also from the AJE Live Blog.......
1:33am

Reuters reports that individuals accused of bombing and shooting anti-government protesters in Libya will end up on trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) sooner or later, the US ambassador-at-large for war crimes has revealed.

Libya: David Cameron urges Col Gaddafi's allies to abandon the leader

David Cameron has urged Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's political allies and military chiefs to abandon the Libyan regime and help bring down the dictator.

By Rosa Prince, Brussels and James Kirkup 6:26PM GMT 25 Mar 2011

The Prime Minister made his call as senior British Government sources revealed that members of Libya's ruling regime and military leadership were starting to "waver" in the face of sustained airstrikes.

Britain and other coalition nations have been privately encouraging senior regime figures to turn on Col Gaddafi and topple him.

Speaking at a European Union summit in Brussels, Mr Cameron went public with that call, saying senior Libyans should ignore Col Gaddafi's orders and leave their posts. "The people around him and the people who are obeying his orders should recognise that the time is up," Mr Cameron said. "Don't obey his orders, walk away from your tanks, leave the command and control that you are doing, give up on this regime because it should be over for him and his henchmen."

He added: "Every day you work for him you are at risk of the International Criminal Court, and you are at risk of being found guilty of war crimes."

2. Does that mean we won't be targeting Gaddafi?
Didn't we bomb his compound?

5. No. It's Gaddafi's agents and spies becoming an invisible army & assassinating opponents
Did you watch the video?

6. You mean the rebels aren't also trying to kill Gaddafi and high officials?
If not, that would be foolish, in my opinion.

9. I guess I don't see the difference.
Of course a military force will use covert forces to try to decapitate its opponent's leadership and silence its public relations. It's in pretty much every handbook of war.

8. Apparently not, they captured a general today, and another person suspected of...
...murdering a Brit the other day.

Yeah, imagine that, capturing high profile people so that they can face the criminal courts.

There is high sentiment that Gaddafi should be charged under the ICC.

I hope they can restrain themselves for that to become realized.

And to be clear, that tactic won't work in Tripoli, only the most trusted (or highest paid) are anywhere near the people in power there. In Benghazi people are walking around with AKs trusted merely because they fly the "liberation flag." It's a tricky situation for them, because they need all the supporters they can get.
