• Thousands of police flood the capital to keep order
• Windows smashed and shops targeted in Oxford Street
• Police attacked by violent minority
• 800 coaches and 10 trains bring marchers to London

14:44 In Oxford St police in riot gear have formed a defensive line in front of a branch of Dorothy Perkins. Next door but one a McDonald's is also being protected by officers as protesters chant outside.

14.30: Groups of demonstrators have attacked an HSBC bank at Cambridge Circus, throwing paint at police officers and attempting to storm the building.

Anti-capitalist protesters attacked the bank, smashing windows and painting the slogans "smash the banks" and "thieves".

Eye-witness Reece Hughes, 41, from New Zealand, said a gang of "about 300 protesters" attacked the bank around 2.15pm.

"They came down the road and started smashing the place in," he said. The branch was closed but some managed to break in.........................

7. Anti-capitalist anarchists

dumb enough to hit a bank after closing time. Makes me wonder if their leader is Uke Hunt. I sure wouldn't want to be charged in connection with breaking and entering into a bank. Police stayed back as they did elsewhere in the West End. Police are spending most of the day just gathering film footage and stills which are probably already going through their face recognition software.

This crew are unassociated with the Trade Unionists in Hyde Park.

4. I guess they aren't afraid of being painted as violent radicals...
whose behavior would be seen as off-putting hooliganism.

Very clearly in a different psychological space than US protesters against draconian budget cutting.

9. I was actually thinkning of my experience at the Madison protest.
There during the union march on the street on the second Saturday, people were running around and shushing protesters chanting 'Kill the Bill' because 'Kill' was TOO VIOLENT.

Needless to say ultimately Kill the BIll won out. It was short, rhymed and named what was wanted in the fewest words.

People came to protest in Madison with babies and very young children. As bad as the bill was, and as bad as it is cut in half, no one was thinking about, or prepared for violence. Preparing for protesting was very different than attending protests in the late 60's and early 70's.

And it may be because people abhor the violence that came with the WTO in Seattle.

15. Meanwhile, the oft-repeated slogan of the Egyptian protestors was "peacefulness" (or

something like that. Not sure of exact translation.)

Peaceable and highly effective forcefulness is possible.

13. Where the hell is this in the U.S.?
Why are we so fucking complacent about everything? Its like people dont even care that we're routinely getting fucked by the GOP, Koch, Halliburton, big oil and pharma. Where are we? Im glad people were so organized and active in WI- but seriously, that was small fries compared to whats going on on a national stage. We need huge protests in DC, NYC, LA, Chicago, Boston, San Fran and everywhere else!

why the police were keeping a low profile and just filming them while the light was good.

Now sounds like those who broke into Fortnum & Masons etc are not being charged with public order offences - they're being charged with breaking and entering aka burglary which is a more serious criminal offence : not necessary to prove actual theft.

Whether or not they get the max. 2 years don't change the fact they are mugs.

"Capitalism is the astounding belief that the wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone." ~John Maynard Keynes

"The crippling of individuals I consider the worst evil of capitalism. Our whole educational system suffers from this evil. An exaggerated competitive attitude is inculcated into the student, who is trained to worship acquisitive success as a preparation for his future career." ~Albert Einstein

"It's impossible for capitalism to survive, primarily because the system needs blood to suck... And as the peoples of the world free themselves, capitalism has less victims, less to suck, and it becomes weaker and weaker. It's only a matter of time, in my opinion, before it will collapse completely." ~Malcolm X
