Gates: Intel shows Qaddafi planting bodies at attack sites
Source: CBS News

(CBS News)

On "Face the Nation" airing Sunday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates told CBS News chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer that intelligence reports indicate Muammar Qaddafi's forces are planting dead bodies of civilians at sites attacked by coalition forces.

"We do have a lot of intelligence reporting about Qaddafi taking the bodies of the people he's killed and putting them at the sites where we've attacked," Gates told Schieffer in an interview taped Saturday.

Gates stressed that coalition forces have been "extremely careful in this military effort" and commended coalition air forces saying, they "have really done an extraordinary job."

Schieffer asked Gates if the Qaddafi regime is planting bodies at more than one location. While acknowledging that bodies have been moved to more than one location, Gates could not say how many.

29. Okay, "Palestinians" is a bit broad
Let's say "militant Muslims in the area."

It includes some Palestinians.

They are famous for using bodies or in general supposed dead people as propaganda, even when the bodies weren't killed in the attack.

Remember this poor 15 year-old boy killed by the Israelis?

http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2010/03/2010330193013794153.html

He was supposedly left bleeding for hours, those inhuman Israeli scum!

Only he wasn't killed. He was just fine in fact. He had been going through smuggling tunnels to Egypt and had been arrested on the Egyptian side and held for a few days.

4. I'm not sure if I'm buying that story. If they're bringing
in bodies to show reporters, wouldn't the reporters know the difference between someone shot and someone blown up?

20. Some reporters are doubting the Gaddafi stories:
Gaddafi propaganda fails to convince
...
But the holes in the wall, which the officials said were the result of shrapnel, could only have been made by someone firing an automatic rifle at it.

Inside the house there were oddities: plaster strewn around the floor, even though the ceiling was undamaged.

The farmer, a strong Gaddafi supporter, said his 18-year-old daughter had been injured. However, the gardener said it was a four-year-old boy who had been hurt.

It all looked like a rather inadequate set-up, done for effect.

23. I am not sticking up for Gaddaffi
Basically, I don't know that I trust the motives of either side. We have supported a lot of rebels that turned into tyrants once they got the power. Then there is the model of the mujahadeen ---> taliban ----> Al Quada ----> 911 phenomenon to consider when we get involved in other people's local disputes.

Many lives (Libyan as well as US/NATO soldiers if this becomes a western occupation) and many borrowed dollars (which will ultimately mean cuts in needed domestic government services) are at stake. Plus I just get tired of propaganda and of being treated like my memory only goes back two weeks.

12. The problem isn't whether the claim is accurate.
I have no problem believing that they have intel that Gaddhafi's planting bodies.

The problem is that most of the intel's going to come from people hostile to Gaddhafi, who have a greater interest in being good opponents and in bringing him down than in telling the truth.

how convenient. Would that be anything like the "taking babies from cribs"?
I seem to remember that was proven to be an outright lie. Tell us who
the intelligence reporters are........and just how did they come by this
information.........direct observation??? sure.............
