Tiny amounts of radiation from Japan reach Nev.
Edited on Sun Mar-27-11 10:22 AM by CountAllVotes
Source: Associated Press

RENO, Nev. – Nevada has joined several western states in reporting that minuscule amounts of radiation from Japan's damaged nuclear plant are showing up. But as with the other states, scientists say there is no health risk.

Extremely small amounts of the radioactive isotopes iodine-131 and xenon-133 reached a monitoring station by Las Vegas' Atomic Testing Museum this week, said Ted Hartwell, manager of the Desert Research Institute's Community Environmental Monitoring Program.

Hartwell said he's certain the isotopes came from Japan because they're not usually detected in Nevada. But he said the readings were far below levels that could pose any health risks.

"Unless you have an accident like this (in Japan) you wouldn't expect to see this. No doubt it's from Japan," Hartwell told The Associated Press.

That gun is useless against your real enemy and that is RADIATION FROM NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS!

3. Since Coulter says that radiation is good for people, maybe this will help cure Sharron Angle.

7. When a volcano erupts, like Mt St Helens, ash went all over the world also. It happens.

Of course it will show up all over. HOWEVER, like most things, the DOSE is what matters as far as health concerns. I am a down winder who lost her thyroid probably due to the nuke testing way back so am aware of the issues and am watching it all. I won't say don't be concerned, but will say it's not time to be overly concerned yet.

It is difficult to know who and what reports to believe.

8. Why do they even report it if it's that insignificant?
Some people just see the word "radiation" and freak out. They don't comprehend that the readings are far below the level of radiation you're exposed to every day. The fact that it's reported in the news makes it seem significant and creates needless fear.

10. It sells news media, for one reason. For another,
if they did not report it, people would accuse them of hiding information we need to know. Hobson's choice, really.

9. Tiny amounts of radiation circulate globally, anytime an
incident occurs. Chernobyl isotopes reached almost every part of the planet. Our own above-ground nuclear weapons tests generated large quantities of isotopes between 1945 and 1968, which also circulated all over the planet. The longer you have lived, the more of such tiny amounts of these isotopes you've been exposed to.

The effects of this are largely unknown, since it's impossible to identify which cancers, for example, were triggered by such exposure. Add to that our increased lifespan due to medical advances, and the effects of all that radioactive stuff that has been carried in the winds is hidden.

We live in an environment that now contains more radioactivity than before 1945. As long as we keep building and operating nuclear power plants, some of them will fail and leak radioactive materials. At some point, the effects may become more obvious. By then, it will be far too late to reverse the process.

Nuclear power generation is not safe. It has never been safe, and cannot be made to be safe.

11. So if radiation is in Nevada, then it passed through California to get there, didn't it?
I thought that wind was rather icy last week.

18. Every time there's a fission event at those reactors
there will be another batch of radioactive isotopes released. For the radioactive Iodine, with a half-life of 8 days, it's generally safe after about 2 months in an area near the release. The Xenon isotope's half-life is even shorter at 5 days.

What we need to be worried about is massive melt-downs that reach the water table and then explode, launching radioactive particles into the jet stream.
