Status report: Reactor-by-reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi plant
Source: CNN

Here is the latest on the status of each reactor and what is being done to prevent further emissions of radioactive material.

.

Reactor No. 1

.

The temperature has been rising in the reactor's core, Hidehiko Nishiyama of Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Monday.

Reactor No. 2

.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Monday that he has received a report that the No. 2 unit's containment building, which houses and protects the reactor core, "is damaged and water is leaking." But he added that he hasn't gotten a report about the condition of the unit's pressure vessel, which is inside the larger containment building.

Reactor No. 3

.

The No. 3 reactor has been of particular concern, experts have said, because it is the only one to use MOX -- a combination of uranium and plutonium fuel considered more dangerous than the pure uranium fuel used in other reactors.

1. and
Reactor No. 4

The reactor's pool of spent nuclear fuel was "possibly damaged," which is why authorities have said its water levels are low and why they've made repeated efforts to fill it up with water.

2. sad commentary
just scanning the summary, which I take was mostly cut and pasted from TEPCO updates - I find this:

Iodine-134, which loses half its radioactive atoms every 53 minutes, was found at less than a detectable amount, officials said, correcting an earlier figure of 2.9 billion becquerels per cubic centimeter.

"found"...?
at "less than a detectable amount"?

how the hell did they find it?

3. Just a quirky translation
probably should be "found to be less than..."

4. This is beyond ridiculous now. They've had weeks to bring this
under control and have not been able to do so. Time to bring in the cement and just bury the darn things. At the rate they're going, they're not only endangering their own citizens, but their immediate neighbors, as well as the global environment. Enough is enough!
