Disaster-hit Japan faces protracted nuclear crisis
Edited on Mon Mar-28-11 08:56 PM by bananas
Source: Reuters

"I think maybe the situation is much more serious than we were led to believe," said one expert, Najmedin Meshkati, of the University of Southern California, adding it may take weeks to stabilise the situation and the United Nations should step in.

"This is far beyond what one nation can handle - it needs to be bumped up to the U.N. Security Council. In my humble opinion, this is more important than the Libya no fly zone."

"Regrettably, we don't have a concrete schedule at the moment to enable us to say in how many months or years (the crisis will be over)," TEPCO vice-president Sakae Muto said in the latest of round-the-clock briefings the company holds.

I originally saw those quotes here: http://enenews.com/tepco-vp-possibly-years-before-crisis-ends
but they seem to have been edited out of the article that links to,
so I googled and found another source.
I don't know why Reuters edited them out of the original article...

12. Since when? The USS Ronald Reagan is still on the Japanese coast doing what it can to help...

... and washing down its decks of radiation in the meantime. Ditto for other military craft involved in helping Japan assess radioactivity in and around the Fukushima plant, not to mention the flight crews.

The US has offered aid in other ways, too:

I am very sure that other countries are doing what they can to help, too. Your flippant comment is distasteful.

3. the U.N. Security Council
They should have stepped in and done something right away, not might get involved over 2 weeks later as the meltdown continues.

I agree, this situation is a hell of a lot more important than bomb bomb bomb Libya!!

:kick: & recommend!!

4. This will be biggest nuclear disaster to date
(and hopefully, forever).

The tidal waves and earthquakes are massive and the stress on those in the region from loss of human life (under-estimated IMO, read earlier that had gone to mass graves for body disposal, general destruction quakes, radiation, radiation pollution of EW\arth and food chain and genetics), and immediate lack of necessities and expectations of a future. Sad for people of Japan that have already suffered much because of their past leaders and response to Japan's aggressions.

The Marshall Plan in Europe and how the USA treated the Japanese post WWII showed forgiveness and faith in humanity and were a high point in USA foreign policy. Still nuclear bombing of Japan was unnessary, an example could have been made with one bomb not including cities.

War now is a mix of politics and violence and technolgy and threats and perceptions.

I feel so sorry for Japan and the nuclear problem with no determined end.

Look at the earthquakes since March 11, 2011:

Unreal the horror facing these people.

10. Mr. Meshkati speaks very frankly, and IMO, carries much credibility.
It's (more than) a shame we cannot receive accurate reports from our own mainstream media sources

11. Has Japan requested UN aid? Libyan rebels requested a no-fly zone for weeks.
No matter what this Najmedin Meshkati's opinion is, it doesn't hold any water unless the country in question asks for help. I am sure if they did, the UN would act but not to the extent that they would endanger the lives of their own workers.
