Arizona enacts ban on abortions based on gender, race
By David Schwartz

PHOENIX | Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:04am EDT

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Arizona Governor Jan Brewer on Tuesday signed into law a controversial bill that makes the state the first in the nation to outlaw abortions performed on the basis of the race or gender of the fetus.

The move comes as anti-abortion groups across the nation try to seize on gains made by political conservatives during the November elections, seeking enactment of new state laws to further restrict abortions.

Under the new Arizona statute, doctors and other medical professionals would face felony charges if they could be shown to have performed abortions for the purposes of helping parents select their offspring on the basis of gender or race.

~snip~
State legislators have said no such law exists anywhere else in the nation.

8. Excellent point
Ultrasound is officially banned (though still widely used) in China for this very reason.

4. And not disability
which is actually happening, when the results of an amnio show the fetus will have (most often) Down syndrome, and the mom-to-be is given inadequate counseling about living with a child with a disability.

But why address anything going on in the real world when you can work in some more meaningless posturing? :sarcasm:

5. Oklahoma did this
It was a state question (it passed) that amended the Oklahoma constitution that outlaws abortions based on gender.

The state also enacted a law that requires a woman to complete pre-abortion questionnaire and this info is published online but without the woman's name.

Here is the questionnaire and note in question 15, the woman can decline to answer but this is at the end of the question. Also, the doctor has to give his/her name and license number.

9. Abortion based on race?
Are there actually any women who have slept with men of 'different races' (race being a far more fuzzy thing that used to be thought), and so they don't know by whom they're pregnant, and they then get a test to determine the paternity, and then base a decision to abort on the result?

Selecting the race of your offspring is pretty simple. You select the race of the father. You don't need to use abortion to do it. That sounds like a red herring, to me.

11. PZ Myers comments about this
http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2011/03/who_believes_governor_jan_brew.php

First, is this a real problem? Are there very many white women demanding abortions because, to their great surprise, the father might have been black or brown? Are there many Hispanic women clamoring to get that pale-skinned mutant out of their uteruses?

Second, it's a peculiar approach: abortion is legal. It is invasive and irrelevant to intrude on a woman's personal decision in these matters, yet they plan to arrest people for their reasoning? Weird.

Third, look who's being punished: the doctors. So a woman may be referred to a specialist ob-gyn who, with an appropriate evaluation of the patient's health and emotional stability, carries out a legal medical procedure…and then later the doctor can be arrested if the patient makes a racist or sexist remark about the aborted fetus? That makes no sense.

If Jan Brewer wants to find somewhere with these problems, maybe China with its one-child policy? And other places with sexist "sons valued more" cultures like India?

most incompetent, and most corrupt state legislators in the history of humankind.

We're #1! We're #1!
