Source: KMBC

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Google announced Wednesday that Kansas City, Kan., will be its first "Google Fiber" community.

Google will build an ultra-high speed broadband network for the city. It is expected to start in 2012. The company said it would work with the Kauffman Foundation, KC Next and the University of Kansas Medical Center to help develop applications.

KMBC's Micheal Mahoney reported that the City Council must approve the plan.

5. Google picks Kansas City, KS to be site for its first ultra-fast broadband network site
Source: Kansas City Star

It’s official: Google says it will make Kansas City, Kan., its first site for its ultra-fast broadband network.

“The entire country is going to be watching what happens here,” said Milo Medin, Google’s vice president for access services.

The news stirred hundreds of giddy onlookers to their feet Wednesday at Wyandotte High School, where many had gathered to hear the surprise announcement.

“We look forward to inventing the future together,” Medin said.

Google provided answers to many questions about the project at: www.google.com/fiber/kansascityks/index.html

it's part of a major metro area but tends to get lost between the bigger KC in Mo. and the wealthier (and RW/fundie-r) Johnson County 'burbs.

I'm sure your head and others' are bubbling with ideas on how to put this to use -- in your case, particularly in edumacation. Let's share 'em around!

11. They had a winning team this year
Consistently ranked in the top ten all season.

They just played a very bad game on Sunday.

They've also won the Final Four in the past. So it's not like they've never tasted victory.

12. I know
I'm just poking a bit of fun.

An old friend of mine teaches at KU and one of his post-docs emailed me that after last Sunday he was not to be disturbed as he had gone into seclusion to meditate for a week. He takes his basketball just a bit too seriously IMO. ;-)

This was made even worse now that I live in Connecticut. He seems to think that even though,or maybe because, I went to schools that had no real athletic prowess I must be a UCONN fan now. If UCONN happens to win the thing I may have to send him a hat and sweatshirt.
