KS GOP Rep. Slams Anti-Abortion Bill: I’m ‘Embarrased To Be A State That Bases Its Laws On Untruths’

The nationwide war on a woman’s right to choose secured significant victories this week. Yesterday, Arizona became the first state in the nation to criminalize abortions based on a problem that doesn’t exist. Virginia will now force 80 percent of its clinics to close. Not to be outdone, the Kansas legislature swiftly approved not one, but two anti-abortion bills yesterday. HB 2218, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, strictly limits abortions after 22 weeks “based on disputed research that fetuses can feel pain at that point of development.” Though only 1.5 percent of abortions are performed after this period, the bill marks a significant victory for anti-choice activists who “have turned fetal pain into a new front in their battle to restrict or ban abortion.”

But not all Republicans bought the Republican argument that “this is a significant advancement” and “a more appropriate benchmark for late-term abortions.” “It’s based on false research,” said GOP Rep. Barbara Bollier who joined 8 other Republicans who voted against the bill:

"No one really knows and it’s based on false research,” said Rep. Barbara Bollier, R-Mission Hills. “It’s not universally held and I would be embarrassed to be a state that bases its laws on untruths.”

3. I know the area
I drive through it at least once a week. Relatively well to do. They have the nicest Police cars but I'd say that they were moderate swing voters. So her stance on this really doesn't surprise me.

4. More Republicans like Ms. Bollier, please
Is it too late, or can we pull back from the brink? It will be interesting to see what happens to the nine Republicans who voted against the bill. Just how much opposition and how much big tenttery will the Republican leadership put up with?

5. Whipping out the E word. (A delicate issue for Dems, too.)
Edited on Wed Mar-30-11 02:09 PM by BlueIris
That's how you know it's bad.

I continue to be, well, embarrassed at how many in our political system are so sensitive to the dreaded E. I really wish they would get over themselves. Their debut balls were a long time ago. It's time to make the laws and the officials who enforce them consistent with reality, no matter how goddamn embarrssing this process can be sometimes.

8. False Research Or Not...
Edited on Wed Mar-30-11 02:13 PM by jladvo
I, obviously being a user of this forum, completely believe it
is a woman's right to choose whether or not she has an
abortion. The only question I raise, and perhaps someone could
tell me how much of an idiot I am and fill me in, is - is
there a time during pregnancy when abortion shouldn't be
performed? Is there a point at which the fetus can feel pain?

I must say, I have a feeling the answer to my question is
painfully obvious, as someone I'm sure will point out.

Still, Barbara can criticize the bill all she wants, but at
the end of the day, it's the Republicans who are
anti-abortion. It's sort of like being a member of a gun club,
then being embarrassed when another member uses a gun.

11. What do you think a vaginal delivery feels like
for the fetus? Their heads are squeezed through a hole that is too small, to the point of deforming their skulls into the shape of a cone. If Republicans are truly interested in protecting the fetus from pain, vaginal deliveries will have to be outlawed.

However, she's a Republican. Ironic is as ironic does.
