Vital Signs: Influential Republicans break with Walker on SeniorCare; vow to save it from budget cuts

SHAWN DOHERTY | The Capital Times | sdoherty@madison.com madison.com | Wednesday, March 30, 2011 6:45 pm

Two influential members of the Joint Committee on Finance sent out a press release late Wednesday afternoon promising to preserve Wisconsin's popular prescription drug program, SeniorCare.

Governor Scott Walker's budget proposal required seniors in SeniorCare to enroll in Medicare Part D instead, a shift which critics have said will lead to scant savings for the state and take money out of the pockets of seniors and put it right back into the coffers of the drug industry.

Finance Committee co-chair Sen. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills, and Sen. Randy Hopper, R-Fond-du-Lac, say they will make sure the SeniorCare program is saved and fully funded.

Their announcement today is just the latest indication that the rigid and united front presented by Walker and the Republican party is starting to crack. Both Darling and Hopper are targets of recall efforts, but in their press release today the lawmakers claim they have taken this new position out of concern for the elderly.

I do not believe for one second that these two Walker Repug poodles are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They are afraid of the recall--the signatures are being gathered.

It's like an criminal gang breaks the door down on a house, threatens to kill everyone. Grandparents, parents, kids, dog, cat, goldfish and they all start crying, howling and meowing.

They get the family to calm down, when they say, no, just kidding, we just need something to eat because we're hungry. So the relieved victims of the home invasion let them have the food in the pantry. Because, after all, they said they were hungry.

Of course it doesn't stop there, they'll do all the rest.

6. It's obvious why they're doing this.
Hopper and Darling are the two most vulnerable in the recall efforts. They already have all the signatures they need for Hopper, and I wouldn't doubt they've collected all they need for Darling as well.

13. Too little, too late? Call me cynical but seniors
were a large part of the Wisconsin teahad last November.

These two may actually think they are shoring up their base.

10. Well heck
they got their union busting bill thru alongwith selling WI to the Koch Brothers (at this time, they think).

Heil Walker and his generals need to step down and go away, far far away. Maybe get a really good position witn fake news or the Koch Brothers.

11. Don't trust them. They've shown who/what they are.
If they are somehow not removed, watch this ploy vanish immediately.
