A free-market think-tank at the center of a controversy over Freedom of Information Act requests to labor-studies departments received a series of death threats and bomb threats Thursday night and early today.

Personnel at the Midland-based Mackinac Center for Public Policy reported the five calls to the FBI and the local police. Spokesman Michael Jahr told the Free Press they appeared to come from one or two women and made repeated references to “The Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC.

Maddow’s name was one of the terms included in a Mackinac Center newsletter’s FOIA request for emails in labor studies departments at Wayne State University, Michigan State and the University of Michigan, and she has talked about the request on her TV program.

Four of the messages appeared to be from the same person. The other may or may not have been from the same woman, though in that call she left a name and indicated she lived in a neighboring state. The Mackinac Center declined to release the name or the state.

1. Death threats are despicable, no matter who

makes them, who they are made against.

There are other ways to let a person or organization know you are opposed to whatever they do.

I think those who make death threats should be prosecuted.

5. Not buying it. One of Maddow's viewers doing that? We'll see if

the FBI really got the info and where it leads. Rachel has come under attack from the right recently. More wackjobs are now aware of her and know her name. Pretty easy for one of them to call something like that in, and try and make it look like it's one of her fans.
